During World War II, many innocent victims were killed. One of them is the Balkan gypsies. This song was written in a freight car, which took innocents to the Jasenovac death concentration camp. Out of 3000 gypsies, only 1000 reached the camp, and only 200 survived the death camp.
Years later, Goran Bregović composed the song EDERLEZI from the lyrics of the song that was sung in those wagons.
This song is a reminder of the victims of the Holocaust - both Gypsies, Jews and Serbs.

Thank you for your attention and greetings from Serbia.

A beautifully crafted song that's sang with an angelic voice! Dikanda is wonderful! Ederlezi is a powerful reminder of a time each year for celebration but ended up on the holocaust trains! So it's a sad and reflective song! Roma people! My heart is with you!

I heard a lot of different interpretation on this subject, however there os something that is bothering me. Origin of this song is known and it's not folk song. Song is from WW2 and has a really sad and powerful story behind it. I don't know is there any sources in English that you can find so here is the story. During Worl War 2 Balkan was divaded more than ever. This is reagion that blooms in different cultures, people and religions. Extremist group of Catholic people who greeted Nacis, caled Ustaše had concentration camp Jasenovac for Ortodox folks and Roma as well. On Day of Saint George or Đurđevdan that is very respected in both Ortodox and Romas tradition Ustaše forcefully put them on train of death as it os called, train for Jasenovac. Half of people didn't even make it to Jasenovac due to overcrowding the train so they suffocate. One young man, probably Roma sing this sange on spot whit original lyrics
Spring is landing on my shoulder
Djurdjevak is blooming(djurdjevak is flower that blooms on Đurđevdan and it is omen that spring has come)
Djurdjevak is blooming for everyone except me.
It is song full of sorrow and at the same time love for life, it is also rebellious act, going to meet potential torture and almost certain death and still singing and celebrating life. We know about this song because of Goran Bregović, good Kusturica's friend, musician in Yugoslovenian rock band called Bijelo Dugme. He knew someone who survived Jasenovac and had same birthplace as people who that day was on the train so he wrote down the song, introduce it to all Yugoslovenian but after decided that this song should be simbol of Roma in Balkan and theirs victims in WW2 so lyrics was transferred on Romas language and has meaning that is more familiar and that you had a chance hearing in Kusturica's movies. This song is about every victim of those horrible ideas but also perfectly represents the spirit of Balkans. Thank you for your attention and I hope we all learn something new everyday. Also excuse my English, I'm not native speaker but I'm trying to improve everyday.

This is just amazing... this must be the Balkan Anthem. To unite balkan states and look forward to the future of our children's... to forget the bad past between us and forgive what our past generations did wrong... if we will stay in the past we will be doing same mistakes like them.... I think that Balkan is more powerful than every one else thinks.... By a Albanian....

Nice version of the original Serbian song " Djurdjevdan ", the saddest Serbian song created in 1942, in a train with INNOCENT Setbian people, on the way to the worst Croatian extermination camp called JASENOVAC 😪.
Thank to Goran Bregoovic for the cover of the original song.
