"Ederlezi" is a popular traditional folk song of the Romani minority in the Balkans.

The song got its name from Ederlezi which is a Spring festival, celebrating the return of springtime, celebrated especially by Romani people in the Balkans, and elsewhere around the world. Ederlezi is the Romani name for the Bulgarian, Macedonian and Serbian Feast of Saint George. It is celebrated on 6 May [O.S. 23 April] (occurring approximately 40 days after the spring equinox). The various Balkan spellings (Herdeljez, Erdelezi) are variants of the Turkish Hıdırellez, a holiday signaling the beginning of spring, occurring on the same day.

The song is featured on Bijelo Dugme's 1988 album Ćiribiribela under the title "Đurđevdan" (St. George's Day). Goran Bregović, the leader of Bijelo Dugme, wrote lyrics in Serbo-Croatian. [1] He later said that he deliberately added two verses from an Albanian folk song, objecting to the fact that "Đurđevdan" is sometimes perceived as a nationalistic song.[

In old times all people celebrated Spring festivals, welcoming vegetation, fertility and marking the beginning of new the Year. When the Slavs on the Balkans were baptized, they continued to celebrate the Sping festival under the name "Saint George's Day", in their languages Djurdjevdan, Gjurgjevden. It has been very important festival especially for shepherds. Turkic people also had a similar festival, only they have continued to celebrate it under the name of Muslim saint - Hedir ( the Green one), who is celebrated together with prophet Eliah whom Muslims call Iliaz or Ilez. For that reason Muslims and among them Muslim Gypsies call that day Hedir-Lezi or 'Ederlezi. This song is a Serbian song, written in the WWII by a Serb, whom fascists drove to a concentration camp. He died, but those who survived wrote the lyrics down. Goran Bregović, a Serbian musician, wrote the music for the song in 1980-ies and called it Djurdjevdan. 1988 Goran translated the lyrics into the language of Gypsies for his movie "Time of the Gypsies" and since then it's become popular among Gypsies.
Y'all can call that Song popular among Gypsies, but to call it a Gypsy song or to ascribe its creation to Gypsies is a sin and wrong doing. Let all people enjoy this song but respect its history.
