In addition to detaching ourselves from the memories of our sins we must destroy our habits that lead us to sin, as habitual sin weakens the will and makes us less sorry, and thus more likely to fall again. To remove ourselves from this pattern of habitual sin, or even the tendencies after repenting, we must continually pray for the grace of compunction. Compunction is when our hearts are pierced with contrition for our sins. This sorrow for our sin is not simply sorrow for the sake of the negative effects on ourselves but for the fact that through committing sin (in spite of having accepted God's mercy), we crucify Christ anew by our betrayal. Compunction is a powerful grace because it instills in us a deep hatred for sin because of what we have done to Our God. It makes deliberate sin, especially so mortal sin hard to commit. It took Saint Theresa 20 years of praying for the grace of compunction but once she received it, she became a great Saint.

“Don’t engage demons” “satans smarter than you” - wise words, I think the best thing this guy can do is repent like you said - ask forgiveness and provide forgiveness as a way to own the memories. Objective reflection is a proven way to get over PTSD.

As Elliot says, Spiritually, “attachment to the trauma you suffered from” haunts us, but “ask god” to remove it.

Dear Elliott, I just discovered a couple of your videos and I think you're incredible.My name is Michael and I'm 49 years old and I'm from Northern Ireland. I think I might be a schizoid type too. I had a bad magic mushrooms trip when I was 15 and became over come with panic, fear, social anxiety and depression ever since. I turned to alcohol big time and it basically ruined my life . Although it helped with the fears at the start it soon made them worse. I ended up in trouble 20 years ago, and i was not a nice place. I'm on seroquel and trazodone now and they help a bit but not completely. I've tried a million times to get off the booze but I always end up back on it.Dont get me wrong I love God and repent and detest my sins.I go to confessions a lot. Also I am half Catholic, half Hari Krishna but I'm confused. I was a strict vegetarian. I'm not happy with my life at all Elliott.My life seems almost over as I'm nearly 50. And I'm terrified of my mum and dad dying. I was 23 stone a couple of years back and now I'm down to 16 and 1/2., through mainly diet although I do train pretty hard in the gym. My drinking always seems to be at night time.I hope you can help me Elliott. Love Michael

It's crazy...yesterday, on Jan 1st, I did exactly what you're saying in this video Elliot. I was coming to a point where I seriously thought the demons of my past would get the better of me, and I would perish. Dunno if I've ever been in such a dark place. So in all desperation, I bowed my head, and prayed. It was probably my most sincere prayer to God in my life. Now, on the next day, I know I am not out of the woods yet... but I do know one thing: God heard my prayer, and He won't stop pulling me out of the ditch. Thank you for this video, will check the biblical passage later today!

A hadith regarding this,

Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

“Allah, Blessed is He and Most High, said: ‘O son of Adam! Verily as long as you called upon Me and hoped in Me, I forgave you, despite whatever may have occurred from you, and I did not mind. O son of Adam! Were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky, then you sought forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you, and I would not mind. So son of Adam! If you came to me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and then you met Me not associating anything with Me, I would come to you with forgiveness nearly as great as it.’”
