Having spent 16 years in the navy, it's not the cat shots but the recoveries that always scared the hell out of me. One thing was drilled into my head, if you don't need to be on the flight deck, stay off it. Great video though.

Got a ride out to the Mid one morning in company with a USN CT and a package for delivery and installation aboard a Navy "boat". Can't talk much about that part of the mission but the ride out to the Mid in a C-1 Trader, the trapping aboard and subsequent launch to return home to the Japanese Air Base where we we stationed was MOST interesting. I've often wanted to go visit the Mid as I understand that she is now an afloat exhibit close to San Diego. I want to see if I can even remember the compartment where they stashed us while a rotor was being prepared to carry us out to the boat. Some day I may get there.

My impression as an amateur recreational sailor of the ship --- DAMN!! These floating bird farms are HUGE !!!.

My impression as a small acft pilot (Cessnas and Pipers) --- DAMN!! That runway is SHORT !!!

Signed, A retired USAF Senior NCO Electronic Tech.

Those that do this job are heroes! They are attentive, know their job, and care!

Those cables are amazing, to pull back a full force aircraft to a stop is mind bending

They spray foam not water. Water would carry any burning fuel (which floats on top) further around the deck which is asking for more trouble.

I spent 1 week on a tiger cruise on the USS John Stennis. I was able to watch the aircraft takeoff and land from the tower. My daughter served on the tower and I was able to access her work station. It was the most exciting experience of my life. I stood in the rain for hours watching these aircraft. Thank you US Navy for allowing families access into the lives of our children who serve.

I remember a while back I was standing on the Crow's Nest watching launches when a S3-Viking took off. You could tell something was wrong, they got turned upside down, ejected upside down, they didn't make it. Flight Ops is serious business, very dangerous.

i 've actually had the privilege to serve on submarines SSBN's and SSN's and Been the Team Leader for ALRE (Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment ) at ASO/ NAVICP Phila I can say without a doubt the Flight Deck on a Carrier is the Most Dangerous 4.5 acres on Gods earth.

09:12 The black guy was not flying the airplane. The captain was promoted quickly and flown out to train pilots and was not present at the ceremony.
