Footage of the Phalanx CIWS Close-in Weapon System in various target practicing exercises.

The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) was developed as the last line of automated weapons defense (terminal defense or point defense) against anti-ship missiles (AShMs), including high-g and maneuvering sea-skimmers. The basis of the system is the M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon.

Consisting of a radar-guided 20 mm (0.79 in) Gatling gun mounted on a swiveling base, the Phalanx has been used by Navies around the world.

AiirSource℠ covers military events and missions from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

I’ve heard a story from my friend in the navy who said that his ships CRAM started aiming at him and i think the only reason he didn’t get shot was because it can’t fire at the deck if i remember correctly. But otherwise he said he was hanging over the side of the ship until they got it under maintenance

I worked in HMS Collingwood. In one of the buildings, they had one of these fully operational. They are fully automated, firing themselves using several radar. They fire depleted uranium rounds.

Engineers: so how fast do you want it to shoot?

America: yes.

I thought that was used to defend against incoming missiles, but with fire power like that makes sense to be able to use it for other things.

Imagine you were stranded at sea and then the only ship that came to you was a navy ship and you get autocannoned

If The Empire had had this, the Rebels never would have made it into the canal to destroy the Death Star.

America: “here’s $700 Billion and 1 ton of cocaine. Do what you will with it”
