Controversial at home, and condemned abroad.

Israel's parliament passed a new law on Monday, retroactively legalising settlements built on Palestinian land.

International law says the settlements are illegal. And Israel's Supreme Court is expected to overturn the newly passed law.

The fact that it passed shows the strength of Israeli right wing parties.

Their opponents say the shift signals a loss of hope for a two-state solution.

Wow, that Allan Baker guy really made the Isreali position seem weak. "Don't go running to mommy, stay here and continue fighting" he says like a big brother beating up his younger sibling. "They aren't illegal because we dispute that characterization and you haven't proven it in court yet". These are particularly loathsome arguments. Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 prohibits countries from moving population into territories occupied in a war. (The 1967 Six-Day War)

West bank and Gaza should both be annexed. Arabs lost the war and should have accepted a state decades ago when they had a chance. Worse still, it's too much of a threat to Israel's security to loosen their grip. Palestinians want 1 state, and no Israel. If Israel pulled out Palestinians would undoubtedly become aggressive once unleashed. Israel would not only have to defend against rockets from Gaza, but also from the west bank.
