Nearly one thousand Family Dollars across the country are closing up shop.

On March 13, parent company, Dollar Tree, announced in a press release it plans to shutter nearly 1,000 Family Dollar stores after seeing declining sales in 2023. According to the report, that includes roughly 600 locations that will close by June. After that, about 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores will follow suit once each lease term finishes.

Prices have increased, but my paycheck hasn’t…

I am the manager of a dollar store in Canada. The cost price that WE pay has increased, so that means we have to sometimes increase our price to make the same profit. So if we got in let's say a hair scrunchie, we would sell it for $2 and the cost price was .45. That same scrunchie is now .65 cost price, so to make the same profit we have to increase our price to the customer. It's the same story everywhere. The shipping costs are more, the gas prices are more now we have a carbon tax on top of our 13% tax. It all adds up, and no one is ever getting ahead. No company wants to see their profits decrease. Whether it's a multi billion dollar company like Walmart, or a little independant dollar store like mine. It's sad how greedy the world is or has become.

When I go to Dollar Tree, I always look at the price per ounce, pound etc and when I compare to Walmart, it's always the same. The manufacturers are making special sizes for the dollar stores and making it a less amount but the price a lot of times is the same.

I’m in California & theft here is so crazy, every time I go into a dollar tree store people are filling their bags & walking out. It irritates me that the employees don’t or can’t do anything so therefore we pay the cost or reason for store closing, even goodwill out here are selling donated items like they’re new😤

I totally agree with you about how sad it is even only 30 Dollar Tree’s. The 970 Family Dollar is really sad when people lose jobs. This all is not good for employed people at these closings.

If their increasing the prices I hope they hire more cashiers, it seems lines are always extremely long with 1 stressed out cashier

You can go to Dollar General and still get A lot of stuff for $1.00. I don't go to Dollar tree as much as I used to.

My store manager told me that they are closing 600 Family Dollar stores this year and 370 over the next several years and 30 Dollar Trees. But they are rebuilding more Dollar Trees in different ones they are closing are the ones in "dangerous" areas as they have had 4 manager shootings in some of these areas. As far as the $1.75 increase...I was told they would be on "Name brand" items only (like Coke, Pepsi, etc) but they will still have the 1.25 items that are not name brand. That's all I got.

My DT is always out of things I regularly bought the last 3 years. Ppl think I'm nuts for stocking up but you never know when you'll see it again now

Well thought out video 🤓You hit on key topics, like food deserts and the loss of key employment from the stores shutting down. You even did a comparison shop. Nice work! 💐

I went into Dollar General today for the 1st time in about 1 year and was pleasantly surprised to see they had hundreds of $1 items. Food, drink and non food items too. They had single serve bags of Doritos for 2 / $1.

Excellent thoughtful video. As a senior living alone, many times the single item at Dollarama or Dollar Tree is more reasonable for than buying 2 to get the same unit price at Walmart or a grocery store, for shopping convenience, home storage (small rental) and shelf life. Thank you for your kind heart ❤️

I’ve noticed the dollar trees around us are rearranging everything and actually making them look nice. They’re also making room for all the plus items that are slowly coming in.

It's really sad to hear awhile back. I've shopped here for a few years now and I'm currently working here three years later. I pray that my job doesn't closed.😢

The Family Dollars are closing as well because they are in high theft areas. When you are soft on crime, that is what happens. Many Walmarts and Walgreens have also done the same thing. If you can't make a profit because of smash and grabs and continual theft, you will eventually close your stores in those areas.

I was just ready to type that Dollar Tree was turning into Family Dollar. Before I typed it out, you said it! I think it was a mistake for them to buy Family Dollar which at the time didn't seem to be popular anywhere anymore.

I appreciate what u were trying to do in comparing grocery prices with DT, but each week, the grocery has a different item on sale but in DT the price is always the same. When DT raise their prices to $1.25 I changed the amount of items i buy now...

Hi Bethany, I still go to Dollar Tree. I find that if I go to Walmart, or Target I tend to come out with something that I don't even need. Like a new shirt or something that wasn't in the budget. I find at DT if I buy something extra it doesn't break the budget. We just had Dollar General open near us. I haven't even gone in it. Now one town over they had a plaza with a Family Dollar and it also had a Dollar Tree. So closing the Family Dollar makes sense. Keep bringing your great idea's I love watching you craft. Hugs and blessings.
