A lot of influencers being outed as pedos or sex fiends certainly helped bring them down a bit.

I hate how influencers get sent SO MUCH FREE STUFF and aren’t even grateful for it. There are a couple of influencers who always complain about all the cardboard boxes that they get with their PR packages... erghhh there’s so many people out there who would love to receive free stuff!

I agree and I'm sick of everyone calling a celebrity or influencer "queen" or "goddess" they are normal humans like us and don't rule over us, saying this just adds to their ego and puts them in a higher pedestal. Why not just complement their talent? That would be so much nicer and truer.

I always find it really odd how when an influencer replies to a fan tweet, every single reply after that is people congratulating them for getting a reply. It's such a strange concept that people congratulate a human for getting a reply from another human, even if they are an influencer. I don't blame the fans or the influencers, I feel like it's down to the way the whole culture surrounding influencers is

I never noticed until you mentioned it, but yes, the "notice me" tweets and comments have disappeared. BUT, I do still think there are many people that put influencers and celebs on a higher pedestal. I'm starting to wonder if stan culture will ever die out as that's still going very strong (especially in K-Pop fandoms lol). Loving the consistent posts!

I'm glad that the whole worshipping Youtubers things has died down, but I feel like it's unfortunately been replaced with stan culture - the whole 'we love you to death, but do one thing we don't agree with and we'll end your entire existence' thing makes me really uncomfortable, especially since it's mostly associated with my generation (Gen Z) and it's weird that I sometimes feel embarrassed to be the age I am. Not only that but the term 'stan' literally came from a song about a fan who's obsession drove them to self-destruction and violence... and people still use the term proudly? TL; DR Social media is weird. I love watching content, but everything else is just too much sometimes.

I definitely do miss the way youtube used to be in a content based way. You’re so right when you said it’s very much drama based now and it gets so exhausting. I find myself only checking in on 1-3 channels frequently anymore because the rest are draining to watch, and thankfully you and dan are some of those people. You definitely bring a sense of positivity to a platform that needs it

It’s been theorised that our brains subconsciously don’t understand that we can see a person’s face and learn things about them on a regular basis and not know them, that’s why people develop an unhealthy emotional investment in youtubers

I've had quite a few influencer like my comments over and over again and people always ask me how I do it. I tell em its all in respect, You show the influencer respect they return the respect. Get to their videos early, Like the videos you enjoy, and FOR CHTIST SAKE make your comments respectful and engaging! It really isn't that hard

I miss the days when influencers used to be good influences, talking about how stuff will be okay to a stressed out generation of teens who needed advice, it sucks how channels like this are so hard to find now

The best/worst example of influencer really is Fyre festival. I am not putting what happened at Fyre on them but they indirectly caused the insanity.

Tiktok still has a form of the "notice" tweet, when people just comment "do they reply" on every video trying to bait the creator to interact with them

the “retweet this video for a follow” thing still haunts me to this day. back in the day i never saw it as a “fan promoting their business” situation but looking back that’s exactly what it was, i guess i’m also sad because it resulted in shane dawson following me and to this day he’s still on my followers list😂

I think, a lot of that also has to do with age. Like I remember being 13 when a YouTube noticing me made my whole day, now that I've grown older (man I sound like I'm 80), I somewhat feel more calm about it.. I think that people that follow you and people in your bubble maybe just grown with you and out of that typical "fangirl" phase..but I guess these kind of things still exists in the younger generation, I see it in YouTube comments now and again, where people comment how much they love stuff from YouTubers without being Just a little bit critical of what they've just watched, or worse saying they love the video regardless of what it will be (so obviously haven't watched it)..to conclude this long ass comment, yes there has been a shift in influencer culture, but also I think these toxic patterns still exist in the younger generation

I think that the slow lowering of influencers from whatever pedestal we used to put them on is a positive thing, and I also think it's really great that conversations about parasocial relationships between fans and creators are becoming more common and that creators are feeling a little more comfortable asserting some boundaries. Recently I saw a video essayist I follow respond to a fan commenting on her appearance with, "Nope, not going to change that. We are not friends and you have no say over what I do with my body." It wasn't said unkindly, but I think some people would probably consider that a little harsh. I personally found it really refreshing. We, as fans of content creators, ESPECIALLY YouTubers, need to be reminded periodically that no matter how long we've followed them, we still don't actually know them. No matter how much they may genuinely appreciate support from their fans, they're not our friends and we shouldn't feel entitled to any more time or attention than they're able and willing to give. Maybe I've just grown out of whatever impulse I used to have to stan anyone I don't know, but at this point I make a conscious effort not to speculate about the personal lives of the content creators I follow, or to care about anything going on in their personal lives that they haven't chosen to share themselves.

I'm only 1 min and 50 s in but I just wanna say: the reason for the numbers, logistically, was that Twitter didn't allow duplicate tweets. So we'd copy & paste the same tweet, add a number, and then send. So that Twitter didn't ban us for being a bot.

In case it doesn't show... I'm a recovering Lovatic....

Edit: thanks for this video! I actually hadn't thought about it this way. ❣️

I've never liked the idea of influencers, but when some of them went on holiday abroad during lockdown "fOr CoNtEnT", that was really the final straw for me.
