Dr. Daniel Swain has been called "the Carl Sagan of weather." He's based in California, at UCLA. Join Dr. Swain and EarthSky's Dave Adalian LIVE at 12:15 central (17:15 UTC) on Monday, July 29, as they talk about climate chaos. Dr. Swain researches the dynamics and impacts of extreme events — including droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires — on a warming planet. His recent work identifies climate-related causes for increasingly frequent and severe wildfires. He has updated info on the Park Fire, raging now in California.

Thank you for introducing me to Daniel Swain. I will certainly subscribe to his channel. It’s been awhile since I felt the least bit of hope about our ability to step back from the brink. Thanks Daniel. Thanks EarthSky

glad to have watched this video discussion. I fully agree with Daniel Swain. I say: The really scary matter here is that, never before in the history of humanity, indeed the history of the Earth itself, has a species been able to predict its own extinction. Yet we do nothing about it.

My midwest inlaws just called and asked, if we had a wildfire on the west coast. I couldn't believe they asked, because I know they watch a very particular news program with a fox every night, so I went on youtube for this program, and found, the last time they reported on wildfires in the US, was 4 years ago, before that 6 years ago.
People all over the US are looking up to an orange sky today and have no idea why. Its a tragedy.

"not what we see" means he's ignoring the 1200 gigatons of pressurized methane in the world's largest ocean shelf - East Siberian Arctic Shelf. Yes that can trigger the Clouds tipping Point at 1200 CO2 equivalent ppm

Great Earth Science, no hyperbole just chemistry… Good stuff keep it going. The very beginning discussing the pace of change you know where we’re going. It’s nice to get good information without reinforcing my doomerism. Which I am trying to quell. I was losing sight of enjoying the moment by worrying about the future.

Electric cars cause MORE damage than a combustion engine does. How you may ask? Because of the extreme amount of carbon created and environmental damages created to mine the finite materials used to create the temporary toxic batteries they use. And the extreme amount of carbon needed to rebuild the power grid to support them being charged. The solution is NOT Batteries that need precious metals raped from the Earth destroying the natural world we live on for very minute impacts on "personal" carbon output. The answer is still use the existing combustion engine but change the fuel it uses to something easily renewable plant based that grows fast and grows best when grown in inside a forest of carbon eating trees, or grows in the shallows of the oceans w/out any harm when harvested as we leave the part the environment needs and take the "extra growth" only. Stop pushing the agenda of toxic electric cars as a good idea because they are NOT!!!

There is more to this than Man's destructive behavior toward this Wonderful World.

If we stop burning all fuels won't that leave us with the aerosol effect?

Can we do something about China and India. Without their total cooperation our efforts may be moot

"Political systems that ostensibly represent them." Individual human beings. Ostensible. adjective. Stated or appearing to be true, but not necessarily so.

I suggest you interview Bjorn Lomborg. He is the author of several books on climate change. Thanks.

how can we know what is a the cause of the current climate if all weather manipulation and solar radiation management programs do not stop for a long period of time...???

OK, so first of all, the climate is a predictable, rational system, and not chaotic, thanks to wonderful organizations like my fav: C3S (EU), especially their "Climate Pulse" page, which today posted the global surface temp anomaly of 0.80 degC over the far more informative 1991-2020 baseline, and 0.80/3.5 (the years since 2020) = 0.23 degC per year on ave.. No "chaos" here. This rapid heating has been on a trend line for the last 18 mo's., so we may see a 2.65 degC global temp increase by 2027, 3.65 degC increase by 2032, and, if this continues, an unliveable 6 degC by 2047. This rapid global heating explains droughts, floods, and wildfires. The planet is so hot right now that our 321 million cubic miles of oceans are heating to 70 degF at midlatitudes, melting 1.2 trillion tons of global ice annually--3.3 billion tons per day, and evaporating 1-1.4 trillion tons of water vapor daily. Remember, what goes up must come down, and that 10-14 trillion tons of water vapor condenses and returns to the surface every 10-14 days. Starting to see the earth's hydrological cycle here?

I sit homeless in my car burning gas at $3+/hr to stay cool. Would it be cheaper in a non-moving box?
