The Germans did as well as they could have expected, given that the Soviets were not going to "collapse when Germany kicked down the rotten door". Barbarossa was based on the Soviets basically surrendering after the summer encirclement battles. The Germans did not have the logistics to continue to the Ural mountains. There was no way for the Germans to beat the Soviets, unless the Soviet leadership followed in the footsteps of France.
