Another trick that works for me is breaking down the task. So if I have to fold my laundry, I'll go "Okay, I'll fold the shirts." I don't like leaving jobs unfinished, so then I'll go "Now that's done, I might as well fold everything else"

My problem is that even those tasks need to be broken down to their tiniest elements. My first step would need to be "ok, you can stand up. That's pretty easy"

My friend Mike calls it "sneaking up on a task"
He's great

DONT SIT DOWN! Lol that's my biggest advice. I usually do all my chores in a frenzy in a short amount of time cause if I sit down or get distracted it's game over lol. The other day I actually did the dishes and tidied up before I went to the store and then chilled for a bit and did the rest of my daily chores I needed to do. I felt normal! Lol

Another tip I’ve heard is to complete chores while you are doing another simple task in the same location. For example: if you are making a cup of tea in the kitchen and waiting for the water to boil, use those few minutes to empty the dishwasher or wash some dishes!

This is such a smart use of autistic inertia. I have AuDHD and like some other people in the comments i thought you were going to list the different mental “steps” of cleaning the bathroom we make in our heads- of which make the task more daunting- instead you made a schedule that gives you more energy to build up to the task! So helpful!! I have done this on accident before and its such a powerful thing to know as an autistic adult. One time my inertia built up so much i deep cleaned my whole kitchen in an afternoon XD thank you for this content! Its so rare to find autism/adhd tips that actually help and are well explained like this.

OH WOW. This is 100% why some days I get so much done! Because I'll have one chore that needs to get done that I actually like to do, and then I'll have the energy to do other ones, which means I'm able to do the big one...I've never put this together before, but I am 100% saving this clip to remind myself!!

THAT'S SO SMART!! As an adhder i just always followed the dopamine and hoped I could work up the momentum for bigger tasks, I never thought about planning the tasks to work up momentum. Thank you for this!!

I work with adults with disabilities, often autism. Being pretty new to the industry, I've learned so much from your videos. Thanks for helping me help them :)

I always need to do about an hour of chores including exercise after work. This is habit stacking with a twist and I like it! I just tend to be exhausted after a normal work day, so I need to start my evening with a small task that is manageable to begin with

I thought you were going to break down the daunting end goal into smaller more manageable progression steps. Then you added what for myself seems like 3 other daunting tasks that would require their own end goal step progression system. 😅

Thanks for making your videos Kaelynn. I think they are fun to watch and have helped in getting points across to people who don't understand what it is like.

Oh my God thank you. I didn't realize this is what I was doing when I would "find my rhythm" or somehow get to that sweet spot where I could Do Things—now I'll be able to consciously build momentum!

I use this so often, but my hack for cleaning my room is that, if I can't dance in it with all the movement (without moving large things like a dresser, bed etc.) I have to at least clean a large enough space for that

I really struggle with procrastination to the point where im failing classes, not because i dont know the subject, but because my brain hits that metaphocal wall and so, to avoid the discomfort i procrastinate. But this seems like a really good way to help me get past that. Thank you so much! ❤

The times I've been able to do this it definitely helps, and find it works better with tasks at work. At home, sometimes watching netflix/doomscrolling is just so much easier, or I get tired more quickly from doing a couple short tasks.
Sometimes it helps more to break down the task into smaller chunks e.g. Cleaning the sink, changing toothbrushes or throwing out rubbish. Makes it easier to finish cleaning the bathroom once I've already started!!

I never figured out why this works honestly, thank you for explaining. It was always so weird to me that I pushed the task away then I did a random small thing in the house suddenly I catched myself doing every chore... Brains are weird

I’m still coming to terms with my diagnosis, I still feel like somehow I’m just lazy or making up excuses for how I feel, not many people understand how I feel, I worry I may always feel shame for how I feel my brain works, but I saw this clip and instantly related to how I’ve taught myself to get through the day in a visual, and I don’t feel so misunderstood and alone, I hope one day I’ll be surrounded by people who understand how I feel and how I act.
