It's called the slingshot effect.
NASA does it all the time to not only change the direction of the craft, but to help gain speed and conserve fuel.
Any object on that kind of trajectory, whether mechanical or natural will do this.
This is NOT unique, and does not mean that this was anything more than an asteroid from outside of our solar system.
