I love that your used bookstore has an area to drop off books to be used as freebies. I've seen free book areas in other used book stores, but they're usually stocked with books that people tried to sell, that the store wasn't buying, and that the seller didn't want to take back home. I love that yours lets you drop books into it! :)

Last hyped book I unhauled was Milkman. Everyone loved it, won the Booker, etc. Could. Not, Stand. It.

I just dropped off a bag of books today to my local thrift shop. I get about 95% of the books I read from thrift shops so it makes my heart happy when I (and see others as well!) donate books so they can go on to deserving homes! 📖💙

Love these unhauls. My housemates and I were discussing the fact that it is time to go through all our shelves again. We try to do it as a group effort so we don't accidentally get rid of a book someone else wants to read. I was just thinking about you because I finished an e-book called The Dark Side of the Road by Simon R. Green. It takes place at an English country estate over the Christmas holiday and everyone is trapped by a blizzard. It has supernatural elements, a touch of science fiction, murder, etc. I enjoyed it - not perfect, but very entertaining.

Yes, Powells is awesome, I miss it with the pandemic going on. Party Monster is a great book, it's just a lot. It's such a raw look at an intense world and real life murder, that I felt like reading a lighter happier story after. But I did really like the book, it was interesting and entertaining. I am split with cozy mysteries, some of them are a bit cheesy for my taste. I find that some of them I enjoy more in they have a historical setting and it's not present day.

I constantly unhaul books after reading them if I don't love them and/or don't care about having them in my collection, I bring them all to a free library and hope they find new homes 😊 A book I'm planning on getting rid of is The End We Start From by Megan Hunter as I thought it was just ok :)

Have you read any of the Miss Silver mysteries by Patricia Wentworth? They’re Golden Age mysteries and should appeal to Miss Marple Fans. The first Miss Silver novel is okay, but the series really gets going in book two. I’m pretty sure they are all available on Hoopla, and probably on Scribd.

Also maybe check out Mary Roberts Rinehart if you haven’t read her. She was an American mystery writer who was often referred to as the “American Agatha Christie.” It’s been years since I’ve read one of her books, but I do remember liking them. I don’t think I’d go so far as to put her on the same level as Christie, but she may be someone you’d like.

With The Fire On High looks like a good book, nice of you to unhaul and share books like this.

I realize you didn’t ask for recommendations, but as for Nabokov, Despair is a fun one, especially if you like themes of doubling, art, and murder. It pairs nicely with Dostoevsky’s The Double.

Hi Mara, the last book I unhauled was The Lord of the Flies. I know it is a classic but I couldn’t handle it. I felt dyslexic reading it, the writing just did NOT work for me at all and I couldn’t follow it.

On a completely unrelated note - what brow products do you use? I have similar coloring to you and am unable to select the right color/product. Thanks!

Good luck with The Girl Who etc, I got to page 20 and gave up thinking -life is too short and my TBR too packed! Even as a middle grade book the writing (for me) was just wrong.
