In this video teaching excerpt from a full-length teaching entitled "Which Jesus Do You Serve?", Bible teacher/researcher Jerry Robinson very briefly examines the ancient Jewish group known as the Essenes.

The Essenes were one of four important religious groups that dominated Israel in the days of Jesus Christ.

The Essenes were a hyper-spiritual Jewish sect that embraced communal life in the wilderness (particularly the Dead Sea region, Qumran caves). They focused upon praying, studying, and maintaining ancient holy writings. They separated themselves from the cares of the city and can be loosely compared to monks within the Christian tradition.

This is interesting. I always wondered what John the Baptist did out in the wilderness besides communing with GOD. Were any of the Apostles Essenes?
