Using the nose as a base is one of THE oldest techniques for sculpting marble statues and also to paint

Makes me feel better about drawing with a dip pen, and I used it because of the same reason: to teach me how to be confident in lines and to force me to use single clean strokes. On my first attempt my sketch looked very wonky, and then on the next day I drew the same sketch and I greatly improved on the space between the eyes, nose, and lips and the head proportion. My line confidence still needs more practice, but 30% of it shows cleaner lines than my previous sketch.

I often see artists on my feed talk about how making art their main career made them lose interest in their art. It makes me slightly worried for my future since art is what I’ve wanted to do for many years. I can see myself improving but the reality that I will need to decide how I want my life to go in two years really is daunting. This video is very comforting to me and reassured me about the decisions I want to make for myself, thank you! Also your voice is so calming.

Even one sketch a day, at 3 minutes is better than none. Time is no longer an excuse!

Those magnificent sketches seem to take us back into the glorious Classical Age

" One of the reasons why an artist might stop drawing is a subconscious fear of failure "

I felt that. I started drawing people's sketches (like my mom and my friends). Then my relatives saw it and asked me to draw theirs. I had no interest so they didn't turn out well and I stopped for a long time.

Man, I can't even tell you how many times I've watched this video. I'm not joking when I say I could watch this videos of you drawing all day. It helped me so much and I really admire your specific sketching style.

I am 1:20 into the actual sketch and everything you have said so far has really hit something with me... I've been doing digital art now for 2 years and rarely touch paper, this has given me the drive to give this technique a go, as I can not always see mistakes straight away on something like photoshop like I would with pen and paper, plus it would also be good to go back to my routes, I love your art and style, you have a new sub

I honestly love this video. Hearing the positive reinforcement not to be afraid to fail and to see as opportunity to improve has changed the way I view my sketches! Thank you

Thanks for some good ideas. I would disagree that you can’t be good at portraiture without learning the proportions of the head and features. Although I did learn them early on I also forgot almost everything and when I try to draw from a photo and I try to use the standard proportions I find it almost always makes my sketches worse. I do better by just looking very carefully at the subject and constantly checking the the photo or model many times. Perhaps drawing from imagination might be easier using the standard proportional guidelines for some. Still the idea of simple drawings and not worrying about getting it right each time is incredibly important. I can see improvement in my portrait sketches within days of more practice.

The thing is you already have a very good base, it seems so easy but you really know exactly where to put each element. This is hard...

As a high school artist, during quarantine I started using microns for the first time and began to consider the fact that I can't fix my mistakes, so I would draw with them all the time to get myself into a different mindset. I recommend this to artists who aren't confident in their art, because psychologically it does help you prevent mistakes because you know you can't change a mistake but have to work around it. It also makes you feel more confident because when I used graphite I was self conscious of if my art looked good enough, but with this I became more confident and like my art more than before and not just because of the increase of skill. I tend to be an insecure person but this definitely made me confident about my art style and might have even made me more confident with myself too.

I see art like love.

Thinking someone is beautiful only, isn’t love. But getting to understand them, and knowing them for what their actual beauty is, is love.

Lots of artist only see art as something that looks good. That like somebody only linking another for their good looks.

But it’s until you get to understand art, or to understand that person, that you get to see the truth in them, and you can finally focus on what matters, and what doesn’t.

And once you get to them, or get to know art, you can finally focus on what truly matters. Making them, or you art as happy or good as it can be.

this really helped me! the first time on sep 6 i attempted to draw a self portrait using an pen so i cannot undo my mistakes, it came out very erm wonky and goofy, cartoonish, then at sep 7 i attempted to draw the same self portrait also using an pen, it had some improvement the lines weren't that scribbled as yesterday and the nose line was atleast abit clear, then today i once draw again the same self portrait, it came out great! the lines were clear, the proportions were neat, the lining of each proportions were atleast clear! the tips really helped me improve my art alot!
