There’s almost something tragic in the assault on the dragon pit IMO— thousands of terrified and half crazy people descending on bound up beasts, barely able to defend themselves.

The dragons are demonstrated, time and time again, to be very intelligent creatures. Syrax attacking the mob may as well have been revenge. Knowing that this isn’t just a couple lizards dying, but the extinction of an entire species, just makes it more sad.

This chapter, IMO, shows the reader more than any other what GRRM thinks of war— cruel, violent, unnecessary and tragic.

George exceeds expectations. In ASOIAF he constantly hints at the Targaryens crazy history, but he really wrote it so well. They destroyed their own house even though so many before them did their breast build it up. Watching all of the dragons slowly die really is sad
