Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday, the country's army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said in a televised address, adding that an interim government would be formed.
Meenakshi Ganguly, Human Rights Watch Asia Deputy Director said, "These last three terms of the Sheikh Hasina government has really damaged institutions, independent institutions, including the judiciary, the National Human Rights Commission, the police," adding that "there are so many communities that deserve social justice and welfare. And this is the time for Bangladesh to move forward in those directions."
Protesters celebrated her resignation and said, "I feel very happy. It feels like we are liberated again, that's why we all came down on the road. My husband and I are fasting today and praying to Allah."
Bangladesh has been engulfed by violent protests that began last month after student groups demanded the scrapping of a controversial quota system in government jobs. That escalated into a campaign to seek the ouster of Hasina, who had been in power for 15 years and most recently swept to a fourth straight term in January.
