Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday, the country's army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said in a televised address, adding that an interim government would be formed.

Meenakshi Ganguly, Human Rights Watch Asia Deputy Director said, "These last three terms of the Sheikh Hasina government has really damaged institutions, independent institutions, including the judiciary, the National Human Rights Commission, the police," adding that "there are so many communities that deserve social justice and welfare. And this is the time for Bangladesh to move forward in those directions."

Protesters celebrated her resignation and said, "I feel very happy. It feels like we are liberated again, that's why we all came down on the road. My husband and I are fasting today and praying to Allah."

Bangladesh has been engulfed by violent protests that began last month after student groups demanded the scrapping of a controversial quota system in government jobs. That escalated into a campaign to seek the ouster of Hasina, who had been in power for 15 years and most recently swept to a fourth straight term in January.

🙏 💪 for Bangladesh 🇧🇩 ❤️ from 🇨🇦. You will rise from these ashes. We, too, need a new government. The one we have thinks he is a dictator. It will not take 15 years for we Canadians. ❤ Freedom

Bangladesh and India are neighbors and friendly. As a citizen of Bangladesh, I will appeal to the Indian government not to interfere in the internal affairs of Bangladesh. Because Bangladesh is an independent sovereign country, good and bad are understood by the people of Bangladesh.

Hasina needs to be brought back into the country IN CHAINS. She needs to stand trial for all of her transgressions. And the constitution needs to be rewritten, and the new government must not have any religious bias. Religion has no place in the governance of a country. It’s a long road ahead, but the country has a great deal of potential if this is handled correctly.

Well done to Bangladesh, but the hardest part is now upon you. Do your best to ensure that the next ruler will not be worse than the last.

People who are saying that the same should happen in Canada.
Whats the point of democratic process then? Please have patience and vote diligently next year. 🍁

Miss Ganguli very much rightly said that Hasina had completely destroyed the state institutions over the last 15 years through naked politicization in the hope that she would stay in power for life. As a Bangladesh citizen. I totally agree this comment.
