Dead Internet Theory is now a reality of AI slop

The Dead Internet Theory suggests that the internet is now dominated by artificial intelligence (AI) and bots, and that human activity is being minimized. The theory claims that AI agents are creating and automating content on the internet, including social media accounts. These agents can quickly create posts and AI-generated images to get engagement on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. This used to just be a theoretical scenario, but Meta has decided to proudly add AI users to Facebook and Instagram. They believe it will increase user engagement. I believe this makes the Dead Internet Theory no longer theoretical and that it's dystopian.

Growing up with AI friends is so messed up. This reminds me when I first figured out battle royale games were putting in fake ai players. I instantly went from "I'm having so much fun getting 12 kills per game" to quitting as all wins felt fake now as I had no idea when I beat a real player.

I can’t speak for others but the flood of ai and tech has actually ironically caused me to disassociate from electronics more and more. The more and more we become connected the less I want to be. Most of my hobbies are no longer tech related and I no longer watch tv and YouTube is the only thing between me and complete disassociation with the internet

Say another controversial thing happens like Luigi… they could flood social media with these bots and shadow ban real users to influence overall public opinions and talking points

As a graphic designer AI art has been unbearable lately, i've been using a chrome extension called 'Pre-AI Search' that just filters google to pre-2023 results and finally can get actual human-made reference again. not sure what that says about future of the internet

It makes sense being many youtube comments are just generic responses or random comments that just list random names

Who tf wants this? Watching Zuckerzoid reveal it like a brilliant idea is the most tone-deaf thing I've seen

YOU can fight back against this. Stop using social media, stop giving bad people engagement even if you want to criticize them, stop looking for answers behind a screen, go out and vote, talk to people, play a sport. The world is getting worse and if all of us dont play our part then we all go down. I just deleted insta and reddit a few days ago and i havent missed it at all

Happening a lot on youtube too. There's load of AI slop accounts doing stuff like YouTube shorts with AI voice-overs on controversial stuff to drive up engament, plus nearly every video on any major channel gets bot comments nowadays.

Moral of the story: keep your kids off social media and most of the internet until their little brains can handle a fake reality and are able to sus out the difference.

My grandma thinks she’s talking to guy from Ghost Adventures on Facebook and cannot be convinced it’s not the real guy. It’s really frustrating because all of us in the family have told her but she just doesn’t have the mental capacity to understand AI or even scammers.

Crazy how Facebook used to demand passport ID to prove you were human and now look 😂

I work in advertising, which is closely tied to social media dnd marketing. We‘ve seen an overall decline in the use of most social media platforms and also a vast dip in engagement. Putting that into perspective, it‘s easy to understand why platforms like Facebook will use AI massively to keep people hooked.

Reporting people on websites such as Facebook and Instagram has become more sketchy due to AI reviewers. I've reported at least 3 dating profiles that were obviously fakes and one person having a super sketchy bio only for the "reviewer" to say it's fine, which was clearly AI.

This is a wild idea. Feels like we can only grab some popcorn, sit back, and watch as the world plays this terrible sitcom written by some of the worst writers.

Ha. We're so fucked.

I hope my job doesn't get automated away. I really wanted another 2 decades before this sort of AI.

Surprised the advertisers aren’t pushing back on this. Ads being delivered to bots generally != revenue.

Gotta love Drift0r's extra commitment to the "me from the future" bit and dressing up like a cyberpunk rebel. But seriously though, this whole thing is fucked up and I want no part of it. Aside from specific subreddits designed for specific media that I like, I've basically sworn off social media for good.
