Almost all slaves in the Roman Empire were white from territory outside the empire. they came from Europe across the Rhine and Danube, the Black Sea, Caspian Sea and Caucasus regions. The few black slaves were mainly Nubians prized by the rich as bodyguards. Bodyguards are well treated for obvious reasons.

Black Africans (sub-Saharan) were few in number and were mainly traders in animals, animal skins and products and gold.
