I don’t slam my OCs with trauma but pain is necessary for growth, and that is an important thing for stories to have.

Yeah pretty much true. You hit your OC with trauma as hard as you can.
Or in my case don't give them trauma unless it's absolutely necessary.

Sometimes I feel like some artists/writers just have a dartboard with various traumas on it and they toss a dart at it and whichever one it lands on is the trauma for their character

I’m less of a ‘give everyone loads of trauma’ person and more of a ‘give this one character most of the problems, but also make him the main emotional support for the group’ person
Really just make him feel like his life is worthless if he isn’t fixing people’s problems

It depends on the character, if it's one of my favorites I develop it based on trauma and suffering but I always give them a happy ending because they deserve it 😊
