I only do trauma under certain conditions. If it's important to the story, if it will actually affect the character and isn't there just for the "EvErYoNe HaTeS Me AnD I haVE No FrIeNdS." Wattpad oc syndrome, and the final reason... I like making people suffer and overcoming their trials and coming out stronger than they did before and they grow so they actually feel like real people rather than a walking trope.

Let’s be real here, giving OC’s trauma under any kind of story or plot is a great way to show how they came out the way they did, sometimes having trauma can show you how the characters came to overcome those and become more stronger and braver than ever before.

Trauma for ocs is like salt, add it to ocs to give 'em flavor, but it doesn't make EVERYTHING taste better. 🧂

Trauma shows a character's weakness. Trauma shows a character's strengths. Trauma makes characters fun to write and play because they have things they are afraid of BECAUSE of it. Things that they will fight against because of it.

also cus its fun lmao

My thing is everyone has a backstory, there’s always going to be formative memories in peoples lives, and I want my character to feel REAL.

figuring out why they act the way they do is fun for me.

So I wouldn’t say I specifically give trauma to all my characters, I give them depth (that just so happens to involve trauma).

No I will never, it's fun, I'm sorry, it creates a good storyline

HAHAH THIS IS SO TRUE!

I love giving my ocs trauma, because let's be honest. Nobody is completely pure and without problems. Plus, eventually they'll need to learn to resolve it, because it hurts to just sit there with problems in your life, doing nothing about it (trust me, I KNOW.).

I love creating a character, then being like “alright now we figure out what’s wrong with you for that juicy ✨character development✨”

WE are their creators
We do what we want
It's character development
It doesn't make it too bland and boring
I gave Maria/Rose and her family some ✨TRAUMA✨
✨✨✨✨✨

lets just be honest with ourselves, oc's with absolutely no trauma are just bland, trauma is like half their identity, simple events that scar them for life really give them the realism and relatability we love to see, it's literally just character development, we're doing them a favor really :D

Here why we give trauma to ocs
1)we need a cool past for them
2)is similar to us
3) even if they passed s- they can breathe 🥲

I'm pretty good at personality stuff and I can promise you, traumas give A LOT of personality to ocs. So don't be shy and give your character that trauma!1!!!111!!!1! (wth did I just write 💀)

Honestly, from my perspective I don’t think people should slap trauma on a character and call it lore. That’s not lore you just wanna be edgy and cool. Like I give my characters trauma, and normally it varies from “might need a hug” to “Owie ouchie ouch Owie that hurts a lot owie” and people need to understand they need to have their characters overcome their trauma as well. It doesn’t need to be some horrible event like “oh their parents died in a car crash and they have to live with shitty grandparents and they get bullied at school blah blah blah” it can be something simple like “yeah they got scratched by a cat multiple times and they fear cats now.” It doesn’t always need to be a terrible event people. Ocs can be relatable without a shit ton of trauma. Thank you for coming to my ted talk :D

I tend to give my OCs trauma because of my own experiences and fears as a way to vent even though most OCs aren’t based on me.

The one whose father left before he was born? My parents divorced when I was little and that messed me up, so I didn’t have the best relationship with my father at the time. The one who lost her closest friends to bizarre death? It has felt like I’ve lost many people I have tried to stay close to. The one who lost her daughter and husband? I’m scared of losing my family. The one who had to deal with someone hurting people in her family and being paranoid that she’d be next and dealing with the grief of losing them? I’ve had to deal with a manipulative pathetic excuse of a stepdad and he has hurt me and many other people. The one whose parents ignore him, and if not ignoring, insult him all the time? I had to deal with that because my stepdad loves telling everyone that I’m lazy and dumb and some more stuff that is horrible to say, he says that for no reason too and would deny it any time I ask him why he says it.

So yeah, before anyone goes telling people not to give OCs trauma, consider the personal reasons someone may have and that it may be a comfort for them.

Top 3 reasons I give my OCs trauma.
1. It’s fun
2. I like watching people suffer
3. It’s fun

Giving OCs trauma dramatizes their actions, allows for a lot more emotional fun when they are under stress, and allows for a lot more flaws. I love it

I remember that one person on Tumblr who wrote a rant about how evil people are for torturing fictional characters.

As a writer I’m all about comforting and cute stories. I give my ocs trauma because it makes the friendships/relationship they gain in the story that much more valuable. Also, it makes them relatable.

Nah, he didn’t go through that much he just had someone get his order wrong at Subway, had his friend tease him, watched his dad die in front of him, was racially bullied to the point of being hospitalized and is addicted to heroin SO just the little things 😄✨

I have a tendency to traumatise my OCs just for shits and giggles. One common way to do that is to have their friends die in increasingly horrifying ways. And one of my OCs went through so much shit as a child that they have become a stoic as a result. And was also given amnesia.
