Buying any Dodge truck that's not a Cummins will ruin your business. Dodge just isn't worth your time, Ford either. #dodge #ramtrucks #smallbusiness #fordtrucks

We're in a second malaise era. Plain and simple. Even Toyota is having massive problems with Tacoma's and other models with general build quality. That just tells you the state of things.

Imagine paying over 80k for a truck that won’t make it to half as many miles and that tracks all your data

Former mechanic and current warranty adjuster here - Chevy is the one with horrible cylinder deactivation issues, and out of the Big 3 Ford has the LEAST electrical issues. Ford's primary issues at the moment are the ten-speed transmissions and CP4-based fuel systems on the diesels. Rams have nightmarish electrical issues, including the Cummins trucks, along with major issues with the ZF transmissions and transfer cases on the 1500s. Chevy trucks smaller than a 2500 have major issues with cylinder deactivation, piston ring carbonization (6.2 only), and transmissions (8-speed and 10-speed); 2500+ diesels have issues with the CP4-based fuel system and cooling systems. Good trucks are extinct.

Stellantis is dog shit. Fiat, Peugeot, Chrysler were all crap enough on their own. Now they have merged it will be awful.

But Ford doesn't have cylinder deactivation on their engines. That's the problem plaguing GM trucks right now. People are having to replace engines on trucks with less than 15K miles on them. From a reliability perspective in 2024, there is no good option (accordingto CR owner survey data). Even the Tundra is packed with issues since 2022. So it doesn't matter what truck you buy in 2024, you're gonna be in a bad way. So you mine as well buy whatever truck you want.

The only reason dodge every stayed in business was because of the cummins

The domestic players are making over complicated, bell and whistle laden shitboxes. The Gov't. regs have some bearing for sure, but American buyers want every leather heated stearing wheel and backup camera ever made.
Buy a plane Jane and half your troubles go away.
Drivetrains? Another matter.

As a dodge technician I agree with this sentiment and to add to this; don’t buy a fucking dually unless your single axle can’t tow what you need. There’s no point in it, you pay more for tires, it’ll vibrate your head off, you go through brakes like crazy, YOU DONT NEED A DUALLY

Someone should introduce him to the pile that is a Cummins Titan.

Buy a used truck from the early 2000s that's been taken care of.

I'm glad I got a 2011 5.0 F150. No 10 speed, no direct injection, no cylinder deactivation.

You got a few hundred thousand miles before the Cummins rams start giving their problem’s, and the problems aren’t with the drivetrain 😂 it’s the goddam hvac actuators

RIP Chysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram, your days are insanely numbered.

Yeah basically every "American" auto manufacturer just sucks now. GM has almost never been good, Chrysler hasn't been good since Daimler, and Ford has been off and on through all its history and I'd say this is one of its worst off periods.

If you want something good, reliable, and repairable, buy Japanese. Options are more limited for industrial stuff, but if the truck fits your criteria as a business it's a WAY better investment than any modern GM, Ford, or Stellantis vehicle.

I know this is "illegal" but delete the EVAP and DEF system. You'll have to get it remapped. Do that, and you'll get slightly better fuel mileage, more reliability, and whole lot less headaches.

If you can afford a 80k truck then you should really consider buying a 25/30 old Chevy or f150 and having it restored...frame off restoration...every bolt cadmium plated.. engine/trans/diff ... paint it stripped down all parts off on a rotisserie..80 grand would do it..

I'm here watching from the sidelines in a 90s Volvo, dreading what's coming. 6 years in and the list of repairs, excluding the usual maintenance items like belts and brakes goes: One leaking cooler and a pair of lower control arms.

Why is it too much to ask for in 2024 that things just.. Work?

Dead on the money. I work in maintenance for a large fleet rental company: we don't get RAM commercial products anymore, duh.

But Ford? Ford we have to, Ford is the safe choice that the industry is over acclamated to. And what happens? We get trucks coming in with dead batteries. Transmission issues plaguing us within 2 months of ownership (god those transmissions are suspect). In my experience in about 70k km you need to keep an eye on rattliness and those electrical sensors.

Look, Chevy isn't perfect: I worry about the Powerstrokes inline 4s in their 1/2 tons. But if you get a 3/4 ton or higher, you've got a solid build that'll serve you. Don't fuck with Ford.
