I loved the cinematography and the overall vibe of Cuckoo, but the half-explanation for the events was mostly just silly.

Seeing movies like this in the theater supports small film. That way we can keep getting movies like this in the theater. I saw it this morning and enjoyed it. Went in with zero expectations.

You know a review is gonna be good when Maggie’s thoughts begin with “…hmm…”

Yup. Right on the money. I enjoyed it sort of, but was lost as to what the hell was underlying all the parts. Had to see what the Fish Jelly guys made of it with all their spoilers. And I don't think I am a particularly stupid moviegoer. I just didn't catch on. Your temperate review was what I experienced. You're the best. Thanks.

When you said that even when you had checked out from the convoluted story you still wanted to hang out in the world… I felt that. And that alone was enough to cement it as my favorite horror from this year so far.👏🏼

Me and my twin brother are obsessed with your reviews. One of the main reasons you’re the only reviewer I watch now (I used to love Stuckman before he lost credibility and impartiality) is because your reviews are almost very stream of consciousness. Full of nuance. You praise each movies strengths while also giving valid critiques. Your reviews aren’t black and white. You never speak in absolutes and just say “this movie sucked.” You are very open about the strengths and weaknesses of each movie. It is clear you are a critical thinker and very intelligent. I ALWAYS agree with you even if I ultimately like a movie that you don’t.

personally i loved it, i got very strong ‘phenomena’ vibes from the film which is great. also thank you for recognizing the influences at play, i see a lot of people who (to no fault of theirs) are coming into the film expecting a traditional american horror experience and that’s not the case. cuckoo is so deeply engrained in the fundamentals of euro horror from the 80’s (and so is singers first film ‘luz’) that if you’re not accustomed to that style or aware of the influence that it has on singer, the movie will of course seem kinda kooky and all over the place and gimmicky…but that’s just his bag! and he’s deep in it! the way it’s reconstructed to feel familiar but also not like a cheap nostalgia piece (I.E. maxxxine) is really amazing. he certainly has his niche, it’s just up to the viewer if they are not only aware but down with that. as always great review, i love the way you analyze and speak about film :)

This review is the most honest one I’ve listened to on here. You’re the only one who’s brought up the writing. Subscribed.

Has been over a year since I've stumbled my way onto your channel. I'm really glad to see you're still at it here in youtube man. Thanks for all the work you put into these videos.

Definitely a movie that thrives on a second watch. At first glance it didn’t seem fully realized to me either but on repeat viewings i love it more and more and it becomes more coherent and interesting.

The connection between animal preservation and controlling women’s bodies made for really unique commentary on how women can be seen as just childbearing vessels. I think this movie works best if you just embrace the bizarreness and fun of it all without worrying about getting everything answered.

Great review!

I liked the first act, and then it just started to collapse on itself, and didn't stop. I'm amazed I stuck it out until the end. Wish I hadn't now. It's a mess. Already blanked it from my mind.

I hate to put films against each other but I’ve been hyped for this one much more than Longlegs tbh.

I found the director’s first film 'Luz' to have lots of interesting moments and I just admire Hunter Schafer; she has such screen presence. Will be watching it tomorrow

really like your reviews on these modern horror/thrillers, youve got a great perspective for them

Still going to check this one out, but this has helped me manage my expectations.

It’s certainly a fairly original film. Reading explanations of what takes place throughout and at the end really helps understand things more clearly.

I was more entertained and compelled by this more than expected; reviews for Longlegs are more positive but it’s clear they’re unwarranted in comparison.

I didn’t care for how Gretchen’s parents suddenly disappeared or the lack of explanation as to how they became embroiled in all of this (money changed hands?) but otherwise I have few gripes.

Please consider reviewing the 1999 cannibal-western "Ravenous".

Liked it better than Longlegs, hopefully alien Romelus is even better and then Nosferatu tops it off with the best horror of 2024 or even The Substance which I’m excited since it’s a body horror film and loved the female directors last film (Revenge 2017)

I agree that the approach was ultimately a weakness for the movie 🤣 I am curious, though, what the experience will be like watching it again and knowing the story's lore and trajectory. Tilman's first movie, Luz, was fantastic and creatively utilized its low budget.

By chance I saw Gina Gershon in Criterion closet and she held up "Bound" as it brought back good memories. Decided to check it out and thought it was great, if youve not seen it or reviewed would be worth it. Wachowski brother's in 1996, you can see many Matrix touches.
