I have a tip if you're ever checking a bag. Always have a carryon with a couple days worth of clothes just in case your bags get lost. I do this on all my trips, I just use my "purse" and it fits what I need.

When creating my own travel itinerary, I often google or youtube "Day Itinerary in Location" This is more helpful to me then trip advisor. All kinds of ideas surface this way- from other travelers or locals who have done the leg work for you & usually the coolest, most unique or less traveled locations/attractions. Highly recommend. Matter fact, this approach led me to your content, Allison. Always appreciative of your advice as a shared traveler. I also have many running lists in my phone of attractions or whatnot after reading articles, watching youtube. etc. I use this list to look back on all the time. It's about being intentional about writing it down- otherwise, it's impossible to remember everything! Happy exploring!

That bit about spending more for a hotel/airbnb for convenience and time is a million percent true.

Looking at geotags is also a great way to know how to dress in a specific location. It help with dress properly for physical activities or just getting familiar with what is appropriate in a specific city.

Ahhhh it’s so exciting to be able to plan an overseas trip again, I’m hoping I can do two next year. One of my favourite tips, mainly for when you arrive at new cities, is to find a free walking tour for the first day. These are amazing to get orientated with different parts of the city for further exploration throughout your stay. The guides usually give you great suggestions and getting that extra context and history of the city makes it come alive.

I hired a guide for a hike in the Andes in Colombia. 100% worth every dime!

I also like to do a bus/shuttle tour of a city when I first arrive. Those typically take you by the best places and then I go back on my own to my favorites that are worth taking more time. -Lynnette

a good itinerairy is great but you always need to have room for spontanous actions or things etc. its the best way to explore.

It can feel like a balancing act trying to pack in as much as you can into a trip while still making it feel not rushed while seeing anything in your timeframe. Not to mention doing your homework to ensure you see the most interesting and relevant sites. Great topic Allison! 😊

These tips are genius! I love the idea of checking how many recent photos there are to gauge how busy a spot will be. Now I want to plan a trip 😊

Great tips, thanks! I went to Alaska on a cruise and had an ice cave tour cancelled because it was 77°F that day. I was soooo bummed! The next day we heard an ice cave had collapsed because of the weather. Not the same one we were going to, but still scary to hear.

A guide is 100% worth it! Also, I like to stay in an area where the locals live, rather than at a touristy hotel. When I went to Egypt, I stayed in an AirBnB that was in a building that a local family lived in. I had my own apartment in the building, and they offered a homemade breakfast every morning, overlooking the pyramids. They also knew other guides who made the trip so much more comfortable. At one point, we had to have armed military lead us to one of the areas we visited. We would have never known this had we just rented our own car. Also, they drive CRAZY there. Nobody drives with lights on at night, and nobody follows any rules of the road. I was on a pretty bustling street right by a call to prayer speaker, and was right in the middle of how the locals actually live, rather than staying at a nice hotel, where I would not have had the same experience. Also, YES, try not to book connections too close together. I was held at 2 security stops in Germany and barely caught my flight (which at first I had, what I thought, plenty of time to get to).

really great tips!! For some, its "duh"..haha.. but SO SO helpful to help others think through things they may never have thought of. For me, I learned on my first international trip (to Ireland) that I OVERpacked.. I used basically half of all the things that I had to lug around with me everywhere. Since then I follow the "pack half of clothing you think you need, and twice the amount of $$". LOL. (actually, working for an airline, I have also NEVER again checked a bag). Happy Travels! and thanks again for a really good post!

Loved this video! Also love seeing your content! Would you do a video on best apps, websites or where to book the best deals for trips to whichever destination please?!?! :)

Related to your last piece of advice, it's good if you can to try to find a few things that you're super excited about seeing at a destination. That way, if one item doesn't work out for some reason, there's less of a feeling of disappointment because you were in the area to see several other cool things anyways.

We just did a trip to Interior Alaska. We have never driven in snow, so we gave ourselves a couple of "snow days" on our itinerary just so we could rest & relax. It ended up being needed due to a snow storm with wintery mix & slippery road warnings. (Driving ended up being not that bad, BTW.)
