As an American I’ve always wondered what a knob of butter was so this is fair.

When this post started, I thought “Oh no, *we’re* the bagged milk people of butter, aren’t we?”

i was thinking they were thinking of a tree branch of butter, which, in my defense, is much funnier

... nobody tell him about my family's secret mashed potato recipe.

As an American, i’ve only ever seen butter in sticks (other than margarine)💀

Nah it's so funny they have a standardized measurement just for butter, a stick of butter is the same volume across the entire us it always cracks me up.

British people will see a recipe from America say "4 sticks of butter" and think "how are they not dead?"

Nobody.

Me, a native Hungarian speaker: wow, thank gods, I literally thought of a stick (like a small branch of a tree) made of butter.

Is this why other countries think we eat unholy amounts of butter 24/7??💀

For our foreign friends, we don't buy individual sticks, we usually buy boxes divided into sticks. It's easier for measuring.

It also makes following any American-written recipes hard to follow, because other imperial measurements can at least be converted to something sensible, but not with butter.

I mean... some recipes COULD involve that much butter!
We aint the most healthy, but I mean... at least we'd do that CONSCIOUSLY.

It's called an Elgin style stick, named after the town of Elgin Illinois. I grew up less than 20 minutes from the place but didn't know until last year that it's the place of origin for the style of butter sizing I'd seen my entire life.

Bold of him to assume we **don't** put pounds of butter into our food.

If your baked potatoes aren't bubbling with golden, garlicy deliciousness I don't want 'em.

Honestly surprised the rest of the world doesn't also do this. It's very convenient to have butter this way. They even have lines on the packaging telling you where to cut to get other measurements.

The sticks also come in two shapes. Both are 1/2 a cup, but what’s funny is they’re kinda regional but not totally. The long ones that he showed are more Eastern, and the West uses shorter, stubbier ones.

Me sitting here like "wait... Y'all only buy the big bricks or containers of butter??" I would buy a package of stick butter >.>

That picture is of a package of 4 sticks of butter; 2 cups worth.

EDIT: I have been informed that the pic is actually one solid block of the same volume.
