My girlfriend and I have been reading a fic called “The Nature of Predators” (available on Reddit and probably some other places now) where the basic premise is that humans get to FTL, find other species, and quickly realize that the galaxy consists of hundreds of “prey” species, obligate herbavores, and one carnivore species that hunts and farms them for food. As omnivores, we freak out the herbivores who want to glass our planet and the carnivores debate whether we are “true sentients” and therefore shouldn’t be farmed and eaten. We then do the human thing and try to befriend everything while doing crazy space-war stuff. It’s great. Highly recommend.

However, because of all the discussion of predation, natural ecological balance, and lab-grown meat in the story, this video feels EXTREMELY targeted. This absolutely sounds like the kind of bullshit that would be floated as an actual “solution” to predators in this story’s universe.

God the flash back I got from college about the balance of the ecosystem is unreal. There is a reason why herbivores shouldn’t overpopulate because of plant extinction. Then us human would be so screwed because of crops and bee population. Carnivores help us humans and the bees!

It might also be interesting for zoo/preserve animals who are fed instead of being allowed to hunt. One problem with introducing captive-bred animals into the wild is that typically they don't know how to hunt to feed themselves. We could use meat robots to teach them how to take care of themselves before being released.

I'd definitely play the post-fall Portal game where we're back in the ruins of Aperature Labs and theres this presence of something hunting you. The more you solve puzzle rooms and progress the more frequent the encounters become, but you don't actually see it until the tension builds up enough. The lights shut off and there is only a faint light coming from the exit you just opened but its all the way across the room, and then you see two red glowing dots and hear the sound that was so distant before but now its right in front of you, and it walks into that faint light and its just a horrifying, giant metal skeletal robot, all mangy and disfigured, and its coming for you. Turns out, the PreyAI malfunctioned (who would have fucking guessed an Aperature AI malfunctioned) and now they are the predators (before they operated on the if/then of "if 'chase' then 'run'" and it flipped to 'if "run" then "chase" so it chases after things that run away from it). You do another chase and run through ruined Aperature until you get to a safe spot, now you have to navigate through whatever destroyed labs you're in now while still waiting for that CLAWTANGBANG sound of the machine coming for you

tbh i think this could be a potentially good idea for animal enrichment in captivity spaces, depending on if the price of maintaining such a robot would be cheaper than bringing in live prey.
