Canon says it's the R1...but it feels like an R3 Mark II. Is that a bad thing?

Great question at the end… answer … NO
I am 1DX, 1DXII, and 1DXIII owner… was holding out for a flagship R1.
I’ll be keeping an eye out for the R1markII at this poing

Doesn’t seem to be much of an upgrade unless you need that upgraded af. Agree with many others who say this is the R3 Mark ii

Im sure they will probably discontinue the R3

I wish Canon had just stuck to their guns and let the R3 have been the R1 back when the released it. Now, this new R1 would be the R1m2. They screwed up then and it seems there is no escape from that mistake. They also need to get a new CEO who is more in tune with current times.

Quit hating on the Canon R1. Just don't buy it. And if you already shoot Canon, sell all your gear and go to another brand. As a photographer of sports this camera is awesome I already use the Canon R3 which is a beast and the R1 would just be an upgrade as far as I'm concerned.

The R3 was originally R1 until Sony introduced the A1 😂 then it was called the “R3” so this flagship R1 is the R3 mark II (at least in the majority’s mind), no surprise. But to be honest, it’s a great camera for Pro Sports/Photo Journalism photographers. Nature and wildlife photographers got the R5 mark II so it’s a win win for Canon to have free advertising at the Olympics 😀

Great review! Clear, concise, reasonable and practical. Not like many howls on YouTube that it's not flagship. Canon has given to people even 3 flagships, and they still howl. If someone need high megapixels, R52 offers that in a superb flagship camera. R1 is perfect for top sports and events for which it was always aimed. I am sure the real pros both in sports and wildlife photography will be most happy to get R1 and R52 respectively. Those tho howl and complain are mostly theoretical pixel peepers (i.e. not quite adequate people) who will never use these cameras at all. I shoot wildlife with Canon R7 and R8. Very happy with both cameras taking photos which win awards at top contests with both cameras. Don't feel any difference resolution wise in image quality. One peculiar thing about the resolution. I use pre capture a lot. R8 is preferable for pre-capturing fastest action because it saves the pre capture bursts sensibly faster to the card allowing to take new burst much faster, it's just because it has the lower resolution! So for capturing fast action lower resolution proves more effective! Canon R52 is clearly a dream camera for wildlife photographer in every respect. Perhaps it's the best wildlife camera for wildlife now. It looks very attractive to me, so fantastically and universally capable. Few words about comparisons. For me pre capture in Raw is absolutely important for effective wildlife photography. Therefore I would not even consider buying a camera without pre capture in Raw. Nikon z9 and z8 have pre capture only in jpeg. So they can't even compete with Canon R52 and R1, just because of this one feature already which is absolutely crucially important for taking effectively amazing wildlife shots. As for Sony a93, it's only advantage is 120 fps. But how many people do really need 120 fps for their shooting? I photograph butterflies in flight. When butterfly is taking off it does it with tremendous speed. Even for that speed 30 fps burst with pre capture is enough. Humans and other animals move much slower. So for any other actions 30 fps is more than enough. R1 offers 40 fps. When shooting on such speeds it's real difficulty to sort out so many photos. For shooting at 120 FPS it's much more heaps. If I would have 120 fps mode, I would not likely to use it at all even with my extreme types of action photography. The majority of people don't need such speed at all. If someone really needs so much not leas than 120 fps, fine let him buy sony a93 and bear with lower IQ and bottleneck in the buffer and record to the slower cf express type A on Sony a93 and with worse af and ergonomics. While R1 can shoot 40 fps unlimited without any bottleneck. Better AF and shooting 40 fps without bottleneck makes R1 more effective for top sports. I am sure Canon R52 is going to be the most popular camera in its class now. R1 will also be extremely popular with the real pros at whom it's aimed. There are already very positive feedback from top tier pros about both R1 and R52.

Lets see how it is concerning dynamic range, noise in the high iso, the speed and accuracy of the autofocus system and the amount of details in the images. From the R3 I know you've got nice detailed images and as long as you don't crop 75% away from the original, it's a good camera for even wildlife and birds. And yes, I shoot birds and other wildlife!! Only thing, the price in my country Holland is foolish. Euro 7.400 is over the top. Stick to the same price like in dollars, so Euro 6.200. Something like that.

I think most people would be more happy if Canon at least put a 30-33mp sensor in it.

I love it, just I don’t love the screen, I wish if it the same screen in Nikon Z9, the way it’s open

Some people are clearly confused about Flagship Cameras because they are the Sum of their parts. So all the MEH commenters are never going to get that, ever. Also, by far the most important part of a camera regardless of BRAND is their AF. Not the MP Count, not the sensor speed in this Category since they all FAST enough, and most Folks noting Video specs would Never use those specs to begin with. This is a Niche Camera for Canon. Their Bread and Butter Cameras are the R5/R6 series. If they add a proper stacked Cropped R7ii, then they would have what neither Nikon nor Sony has. So Canon has done perfectly fine considering their late start into mirrorless.

Olympus had 159 all cross type auto focus points on the mirror-less EM-1X years ago!

The way you shake and sweat and forget about Z8 is just sweet <3

Seems R3 Mark ii maybe more any as this "flagship " doesn't seem to be a quantum leap in comparison to rival companies currently offer. Might see long time Canon users switch to either Nikon or Sony cameras amd use adapters to use their existing lenses

right now, the difference between canon and other camera manufacturer are very clear . Canon define flagship as the top spec camera means for their most important customer (photojurnalist) .meanwhile other manufaturer flagship means top spec'ed for broadest user & use case.

Question from an amateur - for people who shoot raw, which I'm assuming will be almost all those who will be using a camera of this class, in what situation would you bother with white Balance?

FYI 120 is not baked in 30p anymore as mentioned, its normal 120 like other brands.

And the OM1-- the OM-1 has 1, 053 point all Cross Quad Pixel AF for high-precision focusing. Every point is cross-type, enabling detection of vertical and horizontal lines for unmatched accuracy.
