So they're just a temporal spending (if you sell enough).

Some of game devs told me that to gain more wishlists in a game, always join the upcoming steam fests and always have a stream on the gameplay active on steam. I think this is a pretty good tip for devs who wants to get more popularity.

Another important thing about those wishlists! When you're thinking about putting your game on sale, make sure it's at least 20% off! That way it triggers email notifications and drop downs of you have the Steam app

Releasing a trial/beta version on itchio can also be a good idea. i'm not fully sure if it still holds up to the reputation of not having a lot of shovelware nowadays- but browsing tags is more likely to show new releases (plus, itchio lurkers are small indie game fanatics. they're MUCH more likely to play a game with no reviews). More html customization for the game's page. Before downloading any game, a tiny window pops up with an option to donate a custom amount to the developer.

It's common to see a hyperlinked image to a game's steam page at the bottom once you've garnered enough traction. This in combination with your advice is what I tend to see most often work, plus a little luck!
