12V car or sealed lead acid batteries provide us with a convenient way to power up 12V DC appliances, without the need to actualy have a car available.
The first thing to remember is NEVER SHORT THE TERMINALS.
Be very careful about this, because it may cause fire or explosions. Lead acid batteries can deliver large amounts of current, creating large amounts of heat in a matter of seconds. You may burn your hand litteraly in seconds. So always be careful about the terminals and don't connect them to one another.
IT IS DANGEROUS.
Always be careful to connect the correct wires to the correct terminals. In DC appliances, there is a color code that is usualy followed by manufacturers, but it is always a wise choice to make sure about the polarity.
Another important thing is the securing of the wire against short circuits. That's why you should always install a fuse. Usualy on the [ + ] wire and as close as possible to the battery.
So one option you have is to power up an old audio unit you may have. These usualy have many different colored wires comming out the back. You'll need the black, the red and the yellow wires to power up the unit, and two of the sound wires to power up the speaker, so you can actually listen to the music. The black wire is connected to the negative terminal, and both the red and yellow wires are connected to the positive terminal. The red wire is usualy for the memory storing of the unit and the yellow is for the powering up and operation. So in reality, you can use only the yellow wire to power up the unit, but when you turn it off, it won't remember the station you were listening to. So connecting the red wire is always a good idea.
Usualy there is a wire schematic on top of the unit, that explains the wire colors and what they are used for.
The second option you have is to power up a flood light, just like the one I had lying around. This specific one is an LED type flood light, which means that there is a specific polarity to it. If it is connected in reverse, it won't light up. And in general, LED type bulbs have a polarity, so you can only connect them in one way.
The third option is to charge your phone with a car adapter. For this you'll need a car power socket, which you can find by the dozen in the junk yard. You'll need to connect the positive terminal of the battery to the central connector of the plug, and the negative terminal to the chassis of the plug. If you connect them in reverse, you may damage the internal circuitry of the charger.
And of course, if you're gonna use these appliances at home, you're gonna need a 12V battery charger, to fill up the battery after use.
