Get a builders tub and put bag of tarmac in it, then fill with hot water. Leave for 10 or so minutes then tarmac will be softer

I left my bag of tarmac in the sun for a couple of hours then to make it a bit softer I put it in a bucket of very hot water for 5 minutes and it was really easy to use.

Any time I’ve worked with asphalt I’ve used a propane torch to soften it up, as I find it much more pliable and fast-working when it’s warm.

Well done for taking that job on I'd never have thought about doing that.

Hi, I am a school caretaker and have had to do that job on the school driveway, you would find it easier if you do it on a warmer day it will be softer and compact down better.  And I cant think of the name of it right now, but you can get a spray can of tar that you use after you have compacted it down, you spray it around the edges of the repair to help bond it to the old tarmac to stop it breaking up around the edges over time,   it has lasted well on the school driveway and it gets a lot of traffic over it including delivery trucks :)

I didn't realise you could just buy bags of tarmac like that for immediate use and the price you got yours for was very reasonable - great vid.

I did a little tarmac repair today, I got advice from the builders yard, he said to heat the tarmac up with petrol in a wheel barrow if cold temperatures, today was sunshine and the product was better to work with.

Nice job! I would have hit that patch material with a weed torch to make it more pliable. As always, thanks for sharing your projects with us. It inspires me to do more.

Great job, if you use this product again try placing the bag in a bucket of hot water before you use it, it makes it much easier to work with and will pour out of the bag like a crumble. 👍

Nicely done, especially the hoover...good old henry is first out of my van and last back in. I wouldn't go fixing council tarmac as you are not insured and it could come back to bite you. Diesel, and wd40 of course, are great for cleaning your hands, club hammer and other metal surfaces. Where you have deeper/ round holes try and dig under the existing tarmac a few centimeters all the way round and then push the first of the new tarmac into this space. Fill deep holes in layers. When completed this undercut will stop the tarmac from being pulled out of the whole by car tyres.

Nice one Vikkie good result given the temperatures. I didn't realise bags of asphalt was available for DIYers so that's really useful to know.

Nice looking repair, definitely a job best left to a hot summers day though, I have never had cold pack be that tough right out of the bag, so good on you.
