How To Get A Picky Dog To Eat Kibbles? I Did It In 4 Days!

Genie the Goldendoodle went on a mini hunger strike last week, probably because I gave her too many treats recently and now she refuses to eat her kibbles. I had to put her on a schedule to fix this unwanted behavior and to get her back on eating dry food again.

Genie's regular diet consists of kibbles + freeze dried meat, can food once in a while with occasional treats. She is a slow eater, I usually leave the food out for her so she can eat whenever. But on this scheduled diet, things has to be done a little differently, I will only give her 10 mins to eat, if she is not finished by the 10 min mark, I will take the food away from her. I only gave her about half of what she normally eats per meal, so she would be hungry for her next meal, in the meantime, make sure she gets enough exercise. It's ok for dogs to not eat for a few days, but make sure they drink plenty of water. If your dog does not eat or drink anything for a few days, please contact your vet.

Dry food means they also need lots of water. Lots! It is very dehydrating. I don’t think people are given enough of a warning about how dehydrating it can be. She is absolutely adorable.

my pomeranian is little miss picky but shes also a stingy and selfish little girl. so when she wont eat all i have to do is start vacuuming the floor and she runs and gobbles all her food cuz she dont want the vacuum to get her food even though she didnt want ti in the first place. its the funniest thing to see and works 100% every time

My German shepherd does the same thing, I also used to give him toppings on the food but he used to just eat the chicken toppings or broth and leave the kibble .
Been following the same strict schedule with him and giving him soaked kibble since he likes it that way, I give him a treat when he finishes his food properly.

He has started eating food but still gets stubborn some days so I don't give him any treats that day

Is it important to put toppers? Since I'm kinda scared about him again getting picky when I put toppers

I can’t relate more! Cece used to be a super picky and slow eater so I totally get how frustrating it is! I actually find Genie’s stubborness super cute lol, I laughed when I look at her poker face when mommy put her food away. And also eating all the freeze dried pieces and left the kibbles lololol that’s what Cece used to do before too! I’m glad that Genie is fine too - got a bit worried when you said that she has a pump on her hip.

wow! We're going through the exact same thing, even spoon-feeding her. We put her food in front of her and she just looks at us lol and won't touch it. Her father was totally different, he would devour and gulp down his food and will attempt to steal hers too haha. I guess the tough love approach is needed. Today we'll start not giving her treats and taking away her food after 15 minutes, until the next meal. Her own survival instincts will make her eat her kibble.

My 10lb dog is on day 5 of hunger strike (healthy no medical issues still full of energy). No treats or anything just water. He runs to the bowl then skids to a stop and lowers head suspiciously once he sees it’s just dry kibble. Then he sits and stares at me or walks away.

We create the picky eater, my dog refused even the real meat toppers I gave him. no food for one day and then gave him a small portion of good kibble in a smaller dish to create scarcity and then fed the kibble I agreed was low quality to the birds as he watched! Next day he ate the kibble!! Sucked it down!!❤😂👍👍 but he still gets occasional treats and good, real meat now and again!!

My berner just started doing this, he grabs the kibble basically tastes it and then drops it. This is also expensive Open Farm kibble 😩😩😩
