Worst part about locating to me is contractors putting in locates and not doing their work for months later. They'll put in miles of locates and then sub out the job. Then the sub will put in locates and then they'll sub it out and they'll put in locates. I've marked same job (5miles) for 5 months in the devil like Florida heat with nothing being done. Tried not doing it one month and they called the boss man on me and dude called me and got really nasty w me and said they were start work Monday. Never showed up until 4 months later. Residents started getting upset and pulling flags immediately and the boss was upset and the contractors were upset. Shit show. And that was just one ticket

I was a locator for 7 years in the upper plains locating all utilities and I unfortunately worked in both the country and in one of the bigger cities in my state I lived in. I would have to locate 5 utilities on one ticket in town but it was the country that took the most time and work. It was not unusual for me to locate two or three utilities for one or two miles on one ticket. It was one of the best and worst jobs I have ever had. The one thing I didn't locate was residential gas but I located many country main gas lines and everything else including power and communications and a lot of times two or three utilities on one ticket. One great benefit to locating, you stay fit and trim walking many miles a day/week. These locates are not a walk in the park either, it was very tough walking in ditches, sloughs, muddy fields but it sure beat working in towns that each property owner had a fence and dog to greet you.

Locate communications and hate the 15 to 20 tickets a day especially when tickets are directional bore tickets for 1500 ft residential

I saw people locating and thought I would love the job. I did at but yes you burn out. I ended up despising the job. You can never leave a locate and know 100% if your locates are right or not unless you I ended up taking a job with the phone WAY BETTER job. better better bosses union. Now I have a couple friends who have been locating over 2 decades and they like it. So it could be possible you could enjoy this job. But there is better stuff out there

I did gas for two years. I quit when I got a damage on a pipe that wasn't on the map. After getting yelled at for 2 hours, I quit without notice.

Good video… thanks for explaining. I never thought about how these things are done ✅ (or even that the job exists).

a certain fiber company is causing burnout with my husbands crew. Any helpful advice for them. This winter was warm so the crew never got a break. 50 to 60hr work weeks not including their on-call nights and most of them are new to the company. They are exhausted.

USIC phone interviewer/recruiter offered $18.00hr starting pay. I drive 70miles to the Northeast Florida, Jacksonville office for the in-person interview, and the pay offered was $16.50. Total bait-and-switch bullcrap. Totally not interested in any company which relies on unethical business practices like this.
I have 2 other job offers from unrelated businesses @ 17 & 18hr. I would not have wasted my time and gas on USIC had they been honest.
Florida is an 'at-will' employment state. A bait and switch is not illegal, but just reasonably imagine what USIC management may do through the years of employment if they have the cajones and moral-deficiency to do that at the very onset!
