A diode is a semiconductor device that allows current to flow in one direction only. It has two terminals: the anode (positive) and the cathode (negative). When a voltage is applied across these terminals in the correct direction (forward-biased), the diode conducts current. However, if the voltage is applied in the reverse direction (reverse-biased), the diode blocks the current.

Diodes have various uses, including:

Rectification (converting AC to DC)

Voltage regulation (Zener diodes)

Signal modulation and demodulation

Over-voltage protection

Light emission (LEDs)

There are different types of diodes, including:

1. Standard diodes – for basic rectification.

2. Zener diodes – designed to allow current in reverse under a specified voltage, used for voltage regulation.

3. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) – emit light when forward biased.

4. Schottky diodes – known for fast switching and low voltage drop.

5. Photodiodes – detect light and convert it into an electrical signal.

Each type is optimized for different applications, depending on factors like voltage, speed, and power handling.
