What you just explained is exactly how I was able to get to a healthy place. It took years to get where I am. Yet periodically I still find myself having feelings for my ex wife who I believe to be a covert narcissist. 24 years total. The pain is almost completely gone.

I actually owe her the credit because she called me a narcissist and I had no clue what that was but it was just what I needed to start my path studying personality disorders. 4-5 years later and I was finally able to let go of her.
