Lane departure warning system:
A lane departure warning system (LDWS) alerts the driver when the vehicle is leaving its lane. The system is designed to help avoid accidents caused by unintentional lane departures.

- Lane warning/keeping systems are based on:
- Video sensors in the visual domain (mounted behind the windshield, typically integrated beside the rear mirror)
- Laser sensors (mounted on the front of the vehicle)
- Infrared sensors (mounted either behind the windshield or under the vehicle)

Lane keep assist:
Lane keeping assist (LKA) uses a camera to monitor a vehicle's position in its lane. If the vehicle is about to drift out of its lane, the system will apply torque to the steering wheel or pressure to the brakes. The system can also gently steer the vehicle back to the center of its lane.

LKA systems use the following sensors:
- Video sensors: Mounted behind the windshield, usually beside the rear view mirror
- Laser sensors: Mounted on the front of the vehicle
- Infrared sensors: Mounted behind the windshield or under the vehicle

LKA systems operate when a vehicle is traveling faster than 37 miles per hour.
Lane keeping assist is not a substitute for careful driving and paying attention.
