How AI could help keep traditional Japanese dance alive

Fujitsu showcased its AI-powered technology for analyzing human movement on Wednesday (October 16) at a trade show near Tokyo. The tech giant hopes it could be used to help preserve traditional culture as Japan grapples with a shrinking population.
Visitors to CEATEC, an annual electronics trade show in Chiba prefecture which features innovations and technology, were able to attempt movements from classical "Noh" theatre with their efforts captured by cameras, analyzed and compared to model performance.
“With Japan's declining birthrate and aging population, there is a decreasing number of people to carry on traditions and techniques," said Hidenori Fujiwara, head of the Human Digital Twin Division at Fujitsu.
He said the technology aims to help people better understand and experience human movements so that the learning process for younger generations to grasp traditional crafts and culture will be accelerated.
“Through the camera footage, our artificial intelligence (AI) analyzes body frame so that we can capture the movements from different angles of joints. We then create a human CG model from this analysis, which learners can take as their example. That is our solution,” he added.
Fujitsu's systems are already being used in sport and have been employed as a tool for aiding judging of gymnastics since 2019. The technology has also been used in pilates schools in Tokyo since late August.
At the tech trade show, the company showed how its technology can be used to visualise the basketball shooting technique of visitors.
“It was more easy for me to grasp factors visually such as my elbow and axis positioning than being told in words. In addition it was analyzed in a short time so it made me want to practice more," said Takashi Ishikawa, a 46-year-old high school teacher who tried Fujitsu's Noh booth.
Though the collaboration with Noh experience will not be adopted in actual use anytime soon, Fujitsu hopes they could apply their AI technology into more fields in the future. -Report from Reuters
