We did some crazy things with this all-in-one: The G2 type build so it's thoroughly weather sealed... 9 bladed iris, Cine/Video programmability, AF limiter programmability, the close focus, a dual voice-coil AF motor? Nuts, I say. A hell of a travel lens when you don't want to take the entire bag. The 50-300 and 50-400 will be better optically because they won't compromise for the needs of a wide-angle cover but... I've had a ton of fun with mine. Totally agree with your supertele assessment. I would also love one!

The 50-300 in the middle is attractive.

What about 28-300 Vs 28-200 cropped to the equivalent of 300?

Does the 28-300 work with Sony Catalyst Post Stabilization when using VC and active stabilization? I haven't seen any reviews addressing this

Ive just bought one of these. Haven't had the chance to use it yet. I normally shoot during the day, and visit lots of historic places to shoot. I live in China, so it will get plenty of use.

Good to have more choices, I would definitely buy one if not living in Pacific North West, come October and it will be dark and gloomy until February in Vancouver. Photo's you took are wallpaper material, your place Ladner/Tsawwassen looks pretty and peaceful as usual.

Interesting comparison! Seems like the 28-200 is still the lens to beat - especially if you find yourself in low light situations often (common during travel). I really wish Sony would update their 24-240 with XD linear motors, aperture ring, and G badge. Native Sony lenses work much better for video stabilization.

Do I care about corner sharpness? YES! Very much so. Especially at the wider end of the focal range. But maybe even more than corner sharpness, I don't want crazy color fringing, like the 28-200 had.
