Uncovering a Nazi Submarine Off the Coast of Brazil

A German submarine sank to its watery grave somewhere off the coast of South America in 1943. This is the exact moment it's discovered.

The U-513 commander, Guggenberger, survived when the Martin PBM Mariner sank her off the Brazilian coast. Arrested, he was taken to Arizona, escaped and was captured again. After the war, Guggenberger returned to serve in the German military at service of NATO ... he died as an elderly man in 1988 ... That is why finding this submarine in Brazil is so interesting. Lots of history.

The U 505 is in Chicago. I've been aboard her. She is marvelously preserved and displayed by the Museum Of Science And Industry. Well worth the visit!
