I Wish I Played Metroid Dread Like This The First Time...

A quick video to compare the default settings of Metroid Dread to adjusted settings that can all be done in-game and on the Switch. I've played the game with the adjusted settings and haven't gone back. Needless to say, I massively prefer it. Let me know what you think, normal videos will be back soon!

Stop talking about crushed blacks. I get it. You're not required to try out these settings. Holy hell.

And stop telling me to "just get" shit lmao.

I wouldn't do that on a first playthrough because I would miss every secret, maybe on a second.

I actually set the game from the start at -2 brightness. It's somewhere in the middle ground between too dark and too bright. It looks fantastic.

I get that I could still see Samus, but I can't really see platforms that well. I'd be running into obstacles and falling off platforms constantly. I DO agree that the game can look washed out at times, but for me at least, it's not enough for me to be running around blind. That's why we have these settings though; so we can make the game closer to what we each want! :)

The default brightness is probably intended for handheld play.
I spent most, if not all of the time playing in handheld mode and it looked absolutely fantastic.

Setting the Switch's color range setting to full without also setting your TV to full results in a drastic loss of details. It crushes blacks and oversaturates colors

Only do full RGB if you're sure your TV input is set up to receive it. Otherwise you're just crushing detail out of the darkest shades. Definitely turn the brightness down though. The default seems to be set to avoid people complaining that the game is too dark. Not to actually look accurate.

I think the emmi zones being kinda bright adds to it's atmosphere. The brightness of the rooms real help bring out the artificial vibe. It makes it feel alien in an already strange and unfamiliar world.

This reminds me of when I installed a lighting mod for Fallout 3 and it essentially deleted all global illumination for night time and underground interior locations. It was a simple change, but one that I simply can't go without any more. It added an environmental aspect to the roleplaying as traveling at night was possible but more dangerous and terrifying, plus you'd be more likely to miss out on loot. The first time I was attacked by a ghoul in a metro tunnel and hearing his feet slap on the floor but not being able to see him until he was already lunging at me, I nearly pissed myself, and that's how I knew from then on that this was a necessary element to a definitive Fallout 3 experience,

Only set RGB Range to Full if your panel supports it. If your panel goes darker or dims more, it doesn't support FULL RGB

I think this is the reason the game has a brightness setting as one of the main options in the pause menu

I definitely agree that the extra darkness fits, but achieving it like this messes up the colors a lot IMO, making the game look just straight up worse in most parts to my eyes.

Trying this next playthrough, this seems so cool

0:50 personally that looks horrible, the rest is pretty nice, maybe -2 brightness or just use a dci-p3 monitor to increase the saturation

It's good at default on OLED screens. It seems games are being mastered with perfect black displays in mind now, but the problem is now default just looks washed out on LCDs and the in-game brightness settings don't usually have ideal results.

While you do raise a good point especially with the EMMI zones it felt like things being overexposed in the first area was intention and it give it a unique feel. It’s why to me it’s the only area that stands out aesthetically

the best way to adjust the game is to go with the menu tip in the brightness options “move slider until the leftmost image is barely visible” it gets you the perfect amount of darkness and can be changed at any time through the menu if your lighting conditions change. Don’t mess with the color range on the switch though, just set it to auto to match your tv or monitor
