Honestly as someone that grew up loving this game I'm just glad people are still playing it.

Having played Super Metroid after Dread, I think Super is the easier game. It was also more memorable and better paced than Dread IMO. The music was also significantly better. The fact that the game is so old yet holds up so well (better in many ways than its modern installments), really drives home how incredible the game is. It absolutely has earned its title of one of the best games ever made.

Never played it as a kid. Played it for the first time this year, and it's awesome. I can't quite put my finger on why I liked it so much, but it's become one of my favorite games.

I was 10 when Super Metroid came out. When that intro started with the creepy music and the dead bodies everywhere, you knew you were in for something different. What this game nails is atmosphere. When you finally see Kraid, who's too big to fit on one screen, the music emphasizes how tiny you really are. Or when you break into the Wrecked Ship, the lights are off, random ghosts appear, and you can hear something menacingly pounding in the distance. Playing that game for the first time is an experience I'll never forget.

4:18 I’m of the generation of gamers that got to see the release of Super Metroid. Something else I remember from back then is the proliferation of physical strategy guides in magazine racks next to the locked cabinets holding the games. In fact, the official guide for Super Metroid was published by Nintendo of America as part of its Nintendo Power magazine division. Nintendo also ran a game tips hotline that would verbally walk you through games.

So yeah, don’t feel bad about using a guide! We had really nice, full color, guide books back there in the 90s!

I liked that the walljump took time to get a hang of

I love your view, super fresh. I played this back in the day and it kicked my butt, but I beat it it. Its super cool to hear a new take on my favorite series. Thank you, awsome vid!!!

I came to this video expecting a review I would disagree with given the age difference as I played this game back in the mid 90s and it completely shaped my taste in games for decades to come. I was struck with the realization that your point of view is different to mine, but it is well argumented and I find it a great review and point of view. Great vid, I think the title of "No Nostalgia Retro Review" is a great point of view.

“No Nostalgia Review” is a clever take on reviewing these games. I dig it!

As an “old” gamer I totally understand this review. This is a great video I hopped over from the spawncast and your no nonsense style was perfect in this video imo.👏

Awesome review and I really believe reviews like this a very much needed in modern game discussion.

It is very easy for people who grew up with these games to let nostalgia color their opinions on them and not realize how different an experience going back to older games can be for younger gamer or those like me who maybe grew up in the SNES generation but never experienced some of these titles.

We can appreciate the quality of a game while still recognizing the issues if faces when compared to its modern counterparts so that those interested can go in prepared.

The problem is is when you go from a modern game to something from the past it’s a much different experience. It doesn’t mean that your bad game or just means that it’s hard to get used to mechanics you were already used to.

This is absolutely one of my favorite games of all time.

In retrospect, knowing how to wall jump I always appreciated the little animals showing you that you can wall jump and such. I can see how maybe that method of “teaching” is a little obtuse for those playing it for the first time 20 years later.

I played and beat Super Metroid when I was 9. And let me tell you, I got obsessed with it back then. It took me like a month to beat and it felt like such a huge game to my child brain!

I remember figuring out bomb jumping, crystal flashing and wall jumping all by myself and no other game had that kind of depth (that I knew of).

Also, I love aliens and space in general so that helped too.

Only "bad" thing about the whole experience was that I had nightmares about mother brain for years- I refused to face her again until I was in highschool or something

I appreciate the fact that you actually go back and play older games instead of just putting them off. Super Metroid is one of those games that everyone should play through at least once before they die IMO. Other games like this are OG RE4, Super Mario Bros 3, Breath of the Wild, Ninja Gaiden Black, Metal Gear Solid 3, Chrono Trigger, Metroid Prime, Devil May Cry 3, Street Fighter 2, A Link to the Past, and Mario Galaxy 2.

Watcha think about the music? And music in video games in general? Does it adds something to your enjoyment/scores? How do you compare Super vs Dread's?

How dare you rate it a 7.7!!! You are literally crushing the boy inside of me.. imagine a 12 yr old getting this game w/ no guide, no internet, no friends who played this game (everyone else was playing SMW and Zelda) This game gave me all the emotions one can imagine: Frustration, happiness, sadness, agony, awed, satisfaction.... this was truly my first love for video games. Lol, jk, , , i do understand the frustration you mentioned, i actually stopped playing it cause I was lost, but never gave up and when the official guide came out, I went to Blockbuster to finally finish it once and for all. That was how the game was meant to be played, once you know how to advance at the one or two places which seemed impossible to find. I must have played this game for close to a yr non-stop. Even skipping school just to play it (parents never found out:) Gen Z and younger generations will never understand this as there is so much help nowadays, , , from yt videos, to in game hints, you will never feel lost and so immersed in a game. Now it's like tiktok, you just want to jump to the next one w/out having really appreciated something. Anyways this game for me will alway s be a 10/10.

That's so interesting what you say about the wall jump. At 10 years old i found it difficult at first but somehow got the hang of it pretty quick. I didn't even realize they didn't tell you what to do. I guess what youre young you have a lot of patience. Especially for getting stuck in the maze like world of super metroid. In regards to the space jump, The space jump it feels like a rhythm game. Sometimes you've got and sometimes you don't.
