Dude i was pissed finding this out after being the only caregiver for my mom for 4 years and working full time for a piddly $40k a year. I was completely burned out and barely had the energy to do either job. I decided we had to move her into memory care which was very difficult. If it was just ignorance I wouldn't feel bad, but my dad knew about this program the entire time and didnt tell me and just let me struggle to take care of my mom every day and make ends meet. He said he wanted me to keep working but i could have done continued education while taking care of her and resumed my career ahead of where i am now. We were perfect candidates for this program.

Person needs to qualify for Medicaid to be eligible for CDPAP and to qualify you need to have a household income that is significantly under poverty level. That’s how I’m understanding it. If someone can clarify, please advise.

Medicaid pays you, then they take the money out of your parent's estate when they die. So say bye-bye to your inheritance. Now, if and only if your parents are poor, it's a win!

Of course, if you aren't included in their will, it might also be a win... 😂

I will also point out caretaker burnout os also massive, you do not get breaks, and eventually you will be at a point where you need to go back to work with a vacancy in your job history.

In Florida you have to be on Medicaid to be able to do this.

Why not just do both, work a job AND get paid to take care of a parent through CDPAP? Unless there's a unemployed requirement?

You’re not telling the whole story here… the program requires your parent to be chronically ill or physically disabled. That means more than just old, they’ve got to already be in a wheelchair or in need of other assistance. As a side note my grandparents (none of the 4 of them) needed a wheelchair until the last couple months… which is also a bit of a depressing time to be around them. Watching your parents slowly pass… isn’t a good deal

There are some hoops to jump through. And most elderly people I know aren't doing much jumping these days xD😂

Unfortunately they're changing the laws around it. So now it's going to be offered through only two companies and it will be highly regulated. The government saw people were making easy money off of it and so that's that. 😕

But then if you don’t do a good job and they die you can be held criminally liable

This is actually a perfect job for a stay at home parent. If you're already taking the time to be home for your family why not get paid for it too?

Just remember you’re not developing any meaningful skills / resume outside of elder care, and it only lasts as long as your parent does. May want to get a side gig.
