When Sadddam Hussein was killed, Iraq became a fertile breeding ground for religious fanatics. Make no mistake these movements were constantly crushed under his watch. That is why Iraq stayed secular and stable for decades. More than that, Saddam kept other state players from fracturing the peace such as Iran and Israel.

With its enormous oil wealth and powerful military, Iraq was the protector of stability.

The neocons didn't like that.
