I've been playing mario 64 in my 3ds and it's fine. At first I thought it was worse but it's really not. I have the dsi lite and dsi XL but would like to just deal with using one system. Main reason I like playing my ds games on the 3ds is the analog stick makes mario 64 control a bit more comfortably. Biggest reason is I like the play time thing showing how long I play my games.

Now once you play a DS game on the 3DS (and pressing the select + start button for the correct resolution) do I have to press it again when playing a 3DS game to get it back to the correct resolution for a 3DS Game?

Funnily enough I have a different method for better graphics. It's more longwinded but bear with me- It does require another old DS though

1) Remove DS game from 3DS
2) Insert DS game into older DS console (I suggest a 3DS or DSlite, untested with DSiXL/DSphat)
3) Turn DS console of choice on
4) Enjoy!

No, but seriously, this was a major turnoff for me and the reason why until I get DoA Dimensions my 3DS has remained in it's box- Because DS games look AWFUL on it, resolution fix or not.

The spin, is from the microphone picking up sound, not because you pushed start and select

And you still failed to do it correctly...

When you boot into the standard ds aspect ratio, the displays will become windowed off...

And you only need to press start anyhow

(At least on newer firm, so this being a launch 3ds, select may have been required, I don't remember)

@64BitComms So you'd rather have it fill all of the screen, regardless of how it looks? That does not even begin to make sense (and yet explains why so many people are clueless about hd and widescreen)

You have to hold only one of the buttons, not both at the same time and she actually failed to do it in the video lol Btw, when upscaled, the image DOES get blurrier BUT! The anti-aliasing also becomes a lot better and so, your DS games will look blurrier, but a LOT less pixelated. So both options are good.
