Technology firms are increasingly turning to nuclear sources of energy to supply the electricity used by the huge data centres that drive artificial intelligence (AI).

Google has signed a deal to use small nuclear reactors to generate the vast amounts of energy needed to power its artificial intelligence (AI) data centres.

Microsoft and Amazon have also turned to nuclear energy to fuel the AI boom.

Nuclear artificially powered intelligence, sounds like a dream.

Sounds like a solid plan without any possibility of it going terribly terribly wrong

The notion that a new wind mill or a new solar panel is better for the environment than a decommissioned nuclear power plant is idiotic

quantum computers here in 5-10 years, general intelligence AI arriving soon. the world will be a very different place.

What do critics even think of when they hear those news? I can't quite wrap my mind around it.

I mean, it's pretty simple: if you need ever more electricity AND you do care about mitigating emissions, then you surely would need to increase your power purchase output, be it from solar, wind, hydro or nuclear, among other clean power sources.

Nuclear isn't even the most significant investment those very companies are making regarding power purchase.

So, what's all the worry about? I understand that if you are against civilian nuclear power (for whatever reason) you will be frustrated to see nuclear power growth projections.

But why are people making it seem like providing electricity from a nuclear power plant to a data center facility would pose some kind of national security threat?

Does people imagine that this news is about AI operating the power plants? Or maybe that the AI will somehow now have the ability to produce and/or control nuclear weapons?

Seriously, it's such nonsense! Electrons, be it from wind turbines, solar panels or nuclear plants are all the same. It's not as though the AI will somehow be coupled to the operation of those said power plants.

If you think there’s an energy problem now. Wait until you see how much energy an ever growing robotic workforce will consume.

Australia has its power source from renewables.
The problem is we keep having blackouts.

This is actually really good news, there is now a political will or a motive to solve energy issues that should benefit everyone eventually from massive investment from these mega corporations, by the end of the decade I imagine huge breakthroughs in energy with ai assisting those developments.

If the Greenies are successful in forcing EV's, nuclear energy will be essential regardless of AI and data centers.
