If English was spoken like Greek 🇬🇷
Every language has its own unique structure and expression.
In Greek, when we greet someone, we say “γεια σου,” which literally means “health to you.” It’s more than a greeting. It’s a very sweet wish, but when translated into English sounds funny.
The way we structure the sentences differs from English, and it confuses my students a lot. We don’t use verbs such as “do or does” to create questions. We simply change the tone of our voice! And we use articles. All the time! Not only with objects but also with animals, cities, and people’s names! So my tip is when you learn new vocabulary in Greek, you better learn the words together with their articles.
In Greek, we have three different articles:
o (for masculine words)
η (for feminine words)
το (for neutral words)
The most common way to ask for somebody’s name is “Πώς σε λένε;” which literally means “How they call you?” in other words “How other people call you?”
Last but not least, when we are about to end a friendly conversation we usually say: “Τα λέμε!” which means “See you!” or we wish them to enjoy the rest of their day: “ Καλή συνέχεια!”
