It's super simple!!!
Always always go to God's word for the answers.

2 Corinthians 5:6-8 To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 When we die, our flesh returns to the Earth, And our spirit returns to the Father who gave it.

1 Thessalonians 4:13 -17 If we believe Christ rose, then we must believe all those that have died have risen also.

With those three scriptures it sounds like we resurrect/ rise/return to God when we die in the flesh. If you read the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, in Luke 16:19-end, we get a real good picture of what paradise (as Jesus called it on the cross) looks like. If we keep reading in 1 Thessalonians 4, we learn that we cannot prevent or precede those that are asleep. The reason we can't is because they are already with Him! They are not out here in some hole in the ground. And technically Heaven and Hell are not created until after the millennium and the books are opened, ( great white Throne judgment)and everyone is judged.

John 14:3-10 New International Version 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”

Luke 23:39-43
New Life Version
The Two Robbers

39 One of the men who was guilty of death who was on a cross beside Jesus spoke bad words to Him. He said, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.” 40 But the other man on a cross spoke sharp words to the one who made fun of Jesus. He said, “Are you not afraid of God? You are also guilty and will be punished. 41 We are suffering and we should, because of the wrong we have done. But this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 And he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your holy nation.” 43 Jesus said to him, “For sure, I tell you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”

While its true that most Jews of Jesus' day would have believed purely in a bodily resurrection and not their spirits dwelling in heaven I don't think blaming it on money really makes any sense given that this belief entered into Christian thought a fair way before monetary indulgences came to be a common practice. The different concepts of an afterlife seem to have been more likely to be a result of a combination of the position the disciples were left in when Jesus died and they then had to seek a new vision of what a Messiah was supposed to be, compared to the traditional understanding of Messiah as someone who would have temporal power and rule physically on earth with Jesus dead they came to the conclusion that the role of the Messiah was to be some kind of spiritual savior not one that would physically free the people from Roman rule and impart a physical kingdom on earth.

Greek influences imparted by the influence of those like Paul who likely had at least a basic understanding of Hellenic religious and philosophical thought. Though the understanding of an afterlife was very different this may have added ideas that focused more on a soul going to dwell elsewhere.

Connecting the two together you have the idea of Jesus being necessary to get a good afterlife.
