My Bushcraft Shelter Saved Our Lives! 🌪 We Survived a Tornado / Derecho Storm (Building a Viking Turf House - Survival Dugout Viking Hut Shelter Build) *Real Survival Situation* @TysonPeers
--
On the afternoon of May 21, 2022 a powerful Derecho Storm Hit Canada confirms EF2 tornado was part of deadly Ontario storm. Maximum wind speeds reaching 190 km/h in south Ottawa were caused by downburst. The intense wind and thunderstorm known as a derecho killed 10 people and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands more. The storm, which Environment Canada has said involved a derecho — a rare widespread windstorm associated with a line of thunderstorms — uprooted trees, damaged buildings, toppled power lines and left thousands in the dark for hours in the city, including some for several days. Tyson Peers sits in his 'Viking house' in woods near his home in Hawkesbury, Ont. Peers, his younger brother and a friend took shelter inside the rough structure when a powerful storm ripped through the area on May 21. (Denis Babin/Radio-Canada)

So I was recording my New Vikings Bushcraft Episode. My Brother & his friend Miguel had never seen the Shelter before so they were helping me out Behind the Scenes by getting rocks to finish my Chimney! While changing my GoPro batteries I checked my Phone and got this Weather Alert of a Massive Thunderstorm approaching us, my Brother wanted to Leave but it was too Late less than 1 minute the Tornado was on top of us and the only safe place was my Shelter! I still cannot believe we are still Alive… Thank God ❤

The fact that the entire surrounding forest got leveled but your shelter managed to stay put and even protect you from some of the trees falling just shows the amazing craftsmanship that you put into your shelter, amazing work!

Guy made himself shelter with material he found in the woods, that is more durable than many modern houses👌
What a legend

Your poor mom was so terrified. Her cries just broke my heart. You know she was just imagining the worst had happened. You did amazing keeping those boys safe.

You did the right thing. You can’t outrun a storm. The shelter was the best place for you to be in that moment. I live in Texas in the area we call tornado alley. Never run, find shelter in the lowest place possible and ride it out. You did great!

Even if you sound scared AF you still managed to act like an adult man and handled the safety of the kids. Salute to you.

As a US National Weather Service Storm Chaser in Central Eastern Kansas, good job getting into a depression and allowing the twister to pass, Excellent job on the structure and keeping the two younger boys in the depression and keeping control of them even though they wanted to bolt for it. If they had run, they most likely wouldn't have made it. On a happier note. You have lots of building material and firewood now and can replant new trees that are more food friendly.

You built a strong, perfect shelter. You three received a near direct, if not direct hit, and you three came out unscathed. That is a rare thing in any tornado, let alone in a bushcraft shelter. I hope you feel the pride in your skill that you deserve.

There was a whole tree that slammed into your roof and she held. Do you know what kind of force that was? And she HELD. Incredible craftsmanship. Absolutely incredible.

This is incredible. As a mom, though, it breaks my heart to hear the fear and desperation in your voices. 💔 Most of us, at some point before we die, have an experience where we truly THINK it's "the end". And in that moment our true character is revealed. Some people run and leave others behind and others step up and help protect the people around them.

Despite feeling that death was possible, you still focused on keeping the boys from total panic and helped them focus on staying safe.

I've always liked the saying: "People are like tea bags. They don't know their strength until they are in hot water." 🙂

So glad everyone made it out safely. And way to go on building that shelter!! ✊🏻😃

Yes, the dugout design of your shelter is 100% what saved you and the boys. That and the sturdy corner and pitch poles.
NICE JOB!! You are the hero of this story.

I watch Bushcraft videos with my son. He always asks me if I think that the shelters will survive a tornado. I can't wait to show him this one!

i really don’t care what other people are saying about being calm in this situation, this was an unthinkable scenario to you! your emotions were raw and real and to me justified. that was absolutely terrifying. you made the right decision in staying put, reassuring the boys, and being a leader when taking them to safety. more power to you, it was amazing to see your experience like this and im glad everyone is safe

I can’t imagine how terrified you were knowing those kids were with you. It’s one thing for you to deal with that on your own but a totally other to feel responsible for everything your brain will think can go wrong in the moment. Glad you guys are ok!

You handled it perfectly dear. You protected the boys. Your bushcraft saved 3 lives that day.

Take it from somebody who routinely Bushcrafts shelters in the paths of tornadoes when I tell you this guy knows his bushcrafting. This dude 100% can craft some bush.

That split second decision just saved the lives of you and the two children. I have a massive phobia of tornados so I cant imagine anything more terrifying. So glad you guys are safe.

As a mother of 3, ages ranging from 2, 8 and 11. Watching this broke my heart hearing their screams and then thinking they were going to die. Thank goodness you reacted fast and had that shelter. ❤ Wow your poor mom ❤
