Here's the next snare- Gretsch Brooklyn Standard 5.5x14. This is the Mike Johnston signature snare that he helped design. I definitely fell for the marketing. Johnston talks about trying to get something sounding between a wood drum and a metal drum- a workhorse. I could see that being the case, although I haven't experimented with tuning much. It's sensitive and resonant- good dynamic range. It's a pretty heavy drum- Maple Poplar. I'm noticing that Gretsch seems to be stepping up their marketing, and especially with Snare Drums. Johnston is right that there are just so many options, he wanted to design something that was not super exotic but simple and functional. I like the hoops, also.

Do/did you like this snare? You seemed a little ambivalent in your description ;)

I prefer the GRETSCH USA BRONZE to this.
This just lacks some dynamics…no power..
