I don’t think the permanent portfolio is relevant to before ~1970. The point of having two separate asset classes for cash and gold is because the convertibility fixed exchange was cut off by Nixon in that time. It’s true that gold price in dollars was artificially inflated a few times in the 20s/30s/40s from around $20 to $40 per oz. However we were still on some form of gold standard, so cash and gold were really the same. The cash was just a claim to gold.

Harry Browne had a permanent portfolio and a "variable portfolio" to speculate or play the markets in. It was meant as a foundation, not a path to riches. The variable portfolio and permanent are very different in their strategy. Both need to be considered. In the age of free money (inflation printed by the Fed since 1971, too many people have been spoiled by inflation, debasing the currency, to get free money. We are still in a free money, debasement, speculation blow off. Protect yourself.

Where are you getting your gold prices from prior to 1971? 1971 is when gold was decoupled from the Bretton Woods Standard where gold prices were fixed globally. Prior to this was the Gold standard. I see that your returns analysis goes back to 1927 so your analysis may be inaccurate for how the permanent portfolio may act in the future. This would be including gold when the price was fixed to an environment where the price is market driven. Hard to model what gold would have done prior to 1971 if the current environment for gold was applied. Thanks for putting these videos together! I thoroughly enjoy these videos you make.

Great analysis and very interesting. I didn’t know the specifics about this permanent portfolio. But I would argue that you want more rather than less volatility so that when you rebalance, you get increased benefit. Using high profits from the funds that went up a lot to buy funds that went down a lot ratchets up the earnings (assuming you’re investing for the long term.)

The market is so manipulated now ( by the Fed and Big Business ) that I wonder if fundamentals and strategies even apply anymore.
