As a POD seller for the past two years, can confirm that everything said in this video is true 😅. It’s not passive, it’s not simple. The steps are simple, growing the business to be profitable (making it a full time income) is not so simple. I want to open a Shopify store but feel lost in terms of getting customers to that store. Etsy has the benefit of having those customers already so I feel like it’s a good place up get started. Now that I’ve done that with over 14, 000 sales, I’d love up build a Shopify store for more control over my business and hopefully more profit. My Etsy store is general (many niches). Do you recommend picking one of those successful niches for a Shopify store rather than having multiple niches? I’m wondering what makes more sense since I’ll have to have a different marketing strategy.

You are the realist and this is why I pushed the Subscribe button, I feel like I’m having a chat with a friend in the same field. Love it

Yes, so much truth to this video! I’ve been a Shopify advocate for 9 years and still believe it’s the best platform for building a brand with print on demand. Great video!

I’m in the process of building a POD business. I’m at creating design and it takes a lot of work.
But after around 50 hours of learning and designing i’m starting to build design that are more creative and elaborated. Proud of that 😀
I stil have a long way to go, but more motivated than ever.
Thanks to you and Chris 👍

I agree with most of what you say, except about Etsy being a matter of chance. I put a lot of work into my listings, from product research to design to SEO optimization. There are some great tools out there to help with all these things. I also use tools to track the performance of my listings, just like I would with ads. So it's definitely not a matter of 'spray and pray' or luck! I would never blindly design and list a hundred designs. Another thing: I can never understand why people think that listing on Etsy is any more competitive than putting your modest ads out into the Metaverse, where you're effectively bidding for attention against big brands. What could be harder than that? Don't forget, Etsy doesn't just show your listings on Etsy - they're on Google too. The biggest difference between the platforms, imho, is that Etsy is mostly 'pay as you succeed' whereas Shopify/ads is mostly 'pay as you go', whether you succeed or not. The latter can be tough for beginners.

Shopify fees can be a good chunk of change in other currencies than USD and UK pounds. For example, Shopify's $29 USD monthly fee converts to about $75 per month in New Zealand dollars.

My main concern has been quality control. I’ve been back and forth with Printify for weeks. My designs are not uploading. I’ve tried everything they suggested and am still waiting on the tech team to get back to me. Printify on the other hand the designs published and uploaded to my website immediately. I like having control so I’ve decided to just upload all my designs manually to my website and then purchasing the requested product through Printify until we can figure out why the designs aren’t publishing. Printify keeps getting great reviews over Printful so I’ll work around them. Long story short I got even more excited when I realized I didn’t have to deal with Amazon, Etsy or anyone else. My customer is MY customer. Who could potentially become a fan!?! That’s worth the work to me.

I agree whole heartedly with everything you said! I'm new to POD and Shopify, but there's a lot of incorrect information on Youtube, especially from the gurus.... I'm learning the hard way.

You say Shopify is $29/month, but how much do you spend (or would you spend if you weren't a partner) for Shopify extensions (add-ons)? I'll guess about $150 to $200/mo for a simple store. A lot more to get fancy. It may be much less than what it'd take to start a brick-and-mortar store, but people are looking at starting online businesses because of the relatively inexpensive startup cost.

Great vid. I think not everyone is built for entrepreneurship and that’s fine. Some of the concerns you mentioned never came to mind because that’s called running a business. I wished people get out of the mindset of “passive.” If you want “passive” but a stock or rental property. But even then there’s some leg work involved.

In broader terms, what you're conveying is that it's better to sell on YOUR OWN ecommerce website, and not strictly Shopify, right? I know Shopify comes ready with all the tools, plugins, hosting, payment gateway, etc, but if you can set those up yourself elsewhere, then you're in as good a position as someone with a shopify store. Am I right?

Hi Shimmy, I wanted to join your free private community but not sure about the Skool app. I prefer just to provide email but think it needs to also have some type of access to my FB profile. Can you please advise further.... Many thanks.

Do you have any information on doing print on demand for high-effort product? I’m starting an art business, so making 100 products would be extremely time consuming. I’m working on building a YouTube channel as well, but 100 designs would take months (maybe even over a year).

The niche issue is what is hardest for me to wrap my head around right now. If I pick a Shopify store name for a particular niche and it doesn’t go well, can I transfer my Shopify account to a new domain name? Can I test different niche ideas under one Shopify account?
